I have a 4'' to 5'' black band down the left side of our 42'' plazma tv which is 3 years old. How can I fix it and is it worth fixing?

Most likely you have either a bad X drive board, (ublikely) or a bad display panel (most likely) The panel costs more than the set did new, making replacement a better choice. Sorry to tell you the bad news.

Panasonic TC-P42S2 .. Transparent 2 inch wide vertical discoloration on panasonic 42 inch plasma, very left of the screen.

Fixed mine, myself! Black 3 inch vertical band (stripe) appeared after a cros country move on our PC-T50G10. Occasionally we would see white band with multicolored pixel width stripes. Took the risk of taking off the back to see if I could see anything. Found places on sides and bottoms where plastic like 2" flat cables could be seen. Guesstimated where the band was and found that I could flip down a black cover on one end of the cable. Tried to pull it, gently. Mistake. Realized it wouldn't one out like computer hard drive cables, so I took out the screws holding the plate on the other end (it's only an inch long). That allowed me remove the cable. Took it out, cleared away dust, put t back and closed the black over. It worked! Put the screws back in, back on and... we are happy (although I do have four extra screws!). Just be gentle.

My 37" plazma went black

Hello.
Probably not. If sound still there that mean you have problem with sustain board/s and/or higher voltage part of power supply board. If you pay professional to diagnose it properly and fix it it should cost you $150-$175 diagnostics/labor plus about $200 in parts.
I would recommend to invest this money in new LCD or LED Panel TV.
Regards.

The tv has two black vertical bands down the picture. one band is 3 inches wide, while the other is 1 inch. all other functions are normal.

Hi

This is not really a very simple fix but it can be done if you are ok with stripping down your tv, Please see the following video.

When Playing Halo 3... The Screen Shrinks Down...

kyleolver,
16:9 is the widescreen mode, the other size is 4:3 ratio which is what the game's native size, it is picture boxing by the plazma is showing the size as not to distort the image, to get the full screen picture, but make sure it's not the plazma's setting first - where it selects the size of the image, you may have the streched version on your normal play.

One green vertical line in HDTV Vizio 42

Try changing the H/V position in the TV Set Up menu. You can adjust the horizontal and vertical position of the screen and move it enough that the green line disappears from the screen.

LG PLASMA TV WITH COLOURED LINES OVER SCREEN

If the Video (Picture/Pix) is gone but you can hear the Audio (sound), then it could mean the YSUS PCB Assembly is gone/kaput/finish. Can replace the PCB, not repair the PCB due to timing circuitry involve. Cost maybe roughly $500 depending where you located. The PCB is located on the left hand side of your TV when you are facing the back (Back open). Might find 3-4 brown flex membrane connecting to the plasma panel. The PCB has a silver or black aluminum heatsink (big) on it.
Good Luck.
