HP 12C Function key not working propoerly. I am trying simple cash flow problems with my instructor in my finance course. He is watching me to make sure i am entering it correctly. My 12C gives a different answer than his 12C. He says it must be the "F" key because he tested a few other entries and they were not correct. I've tried to do a reset on my 12C, but the problem will not work. I am confident in my entry. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: HP 12c cALCULATOR

It is not calculating because your decimal point and the digit separator (that's the comma which automatically displays for every group of 3 digits) got messed up. To clear, turn the calculator OFF, then press and hold down the dot (that is the decimal point symbol) key while you press the ON key..

Try glass cleaner with a paper towel. If that doesn't work you'll have to take it apart and remove the button pad.

SOURCE: I am currently studying for the CFA Level I exam,

Personally, I'd go with the regular, or the Plus, staying away from the Platinum. There's nothing on the calculator or package to distinguish the Plus from the regular, but the Plus uses two coin batteries while the regular uses three button batteries. The Plus is just like the regular, except a LOT faster.

How do you clear RNP for an HP 12C

I take it you mean a 12C Platinum.

Press f ALG. ALG is the f-shifted function of the EEX key, just above the double-size ENTER key. This will switch the 12C Platinum from RPN mode to Algebraic mode, and ALG indicator will light up instead of the RPN indicator.

To switch back to RPN, press f RPN. RPN is the f-shifted function of the CHS key just above the EEX key.

The following problem is not difficult, however, I am having trouble calculating the answer using my HP 12c Platinum. Can you please provide a step by step explantation of how to calculate the answer to...

1. Make sure the HP-12C is in compounding mode. Press STO-EEX repeatedly until a tiny "C" appears in lower right of display.
2. Make sure "BEGIN" is NOT shown in the display. If it is, press g-END.
3. Clear financial registers: f-FIN. (That is really the "f" key then kind of the "Clear FIN" key -- I'm sure you'll see it.)
4. Enter zero as "initial investment". CLx, then g-CF0. (You have to do this because the 12C actually computes the "NPV" as an excess or deficit over the entered "initial investment". By entering zero, you force the calculator to just give you the actual net present value.)
5. Your first cash flow is +2.00. So, enter 2.00, then press g-CFj.
6. Next cash flow: +2.10. Enter 2.1, then press g-CFj.
7. Last cash flow: +22.20 (the final value of the stock plus the last dividend payment). Enter 22.20, then press g-CFj.
8. Enter the 10% interest (a.k.a. discount) rate. Enter 10, then press "i".
9. Compute the NPV. Press g-NPV. The answer is indeed 20.23 (at least to two decimal places).

If log 1000 = 3, how do I do this with my hp 12c calculator

The 12C does not have the common logarithm function built-in, but you can calculate it using the natural logarithm function (the blue g shift of the %T key, 2nd row, 3rd key).

The common logarithm of x is the natural logarithm of x divided by the natural logarithm of 10, or
log x = ln x / ln 10

Press 1 0 0 0 g [LN] 1 0 g [LN] /
and you'll get the result 3.

How to Calculate IRR?

To calculate IRR and NPVEnter the cash flows as follows, remembering the sign convention:
  • Clear previous data by pressing fXY and fCLX.
  • Enter the cash flow at time zero using # gPV [# CF0].
  • Enter subsequent cash flows using # gPMT [# CFj].
  • If a cash flow is repeated, enter the number of times it is repeated (including the first time you just entered) using # gFV [# Nj]. For example, three equal flows in a row would be entered as3 Nj.
  • When you have entered your last cash flow:
    • If you are calculating an NPV, enter your interest rate as # i (consistent with interval between cash flows) followed by fPV [NPV].

    • If you are calculating an IRR, enter fFV [IRR].

I did not come up with this solution. Just found it for you.

Are we dealing with a 12C Platinum instead of a 12C?

On a 12C Platinum in ALG mode, you don't use the ENTER key at all, but the = key.
