Most likely you need a codec. The trick is knowing which one you need!! So, some good folks have made packs which I have found usually meet the need. Try this one here:

This model laptop came with a 60Gb hard drive and it will work with a 40Gb hard drive. If it was me I would install a 60 Gb hard drive not a smaller one.
I would hook up an external monitor to see if the laptop is working. If it is working fine then you must have a connection problem where the LCD plugs into the motherboard. I am willing to bet it is the LCD cable mot seated correctly. If it does not work on an external monitor try switching the memory chips one at a time if you have 2. Everything you mention indicates it is booting but no video. Good Luck Phil

You said,you donot hear any sound on your laptop INS6400. Here is what you can try. 1. Install the audio driver for your computer click here. If that doesnot fix the problem, simple solution is click on start /control pannel (classic view) / sound and audio devices / go to audio tab at the top / in the playbaack device from the drop down select sigmatel or realtech or intel etc but make sure no modem playback should be there. and apply and it should fix the problem.

remove the laptop (large battery) then: remove the bios battery (small) from the motherboard wait ten minutes pluf in the laptop reboot then shutdown and reinsert the laptop battery. your code will be erased
You are very welcome. I am glad I could help. Apparently what happens is that the drive takes errors and XP downgrades the transfer mode. Once that happens you will have flaky problems, another problem you will see when this has occured is when you try to burn a CD or DVD. It might burn for a while and then just towards the end it will fail.
Go to Control panel, Mouse Properties, On the Devices Tab, You can disable there. It that is not an option, install the Synaptics driver, then you'll have the option.
Try visiting the DELL web site and look for the software there as for the mic it may be loose inside the enclosure carefully open it and check for lose cables or screws
