Question about Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3160815A - 160GB - 7200rpm - 100MBps Ultra ATA/100 (ATA-6) - ... 160 GB EIDE Hard Drive
I have an amd athlon 64x2 dual core processor 2.4ghz and 1gb ram.. equipped with 160 gb seagate sata hdd.. everythign was fien until 27th feb 09 when winxp hanged and showed up the blue death screen. i tried reinstalling xp by a cd but the xp installtion can't format the hard drive.. like, when i enter the option FORMAT USING NTFS function, it doesnt even show 1 percent.. but when i format it using FORMAT USING NTFS QUICK, it formats and installs xp in a jiffy... im confused if im really able to rectify this problem or else give it to the nearest seagate for a check up..
help at the earliest would be highly appreciated
The firmware is damaged, sir, nothing can do.you should go to the dr company to repair your hdd first by using HD Doctor or other tools,it is a typical bug for 7200.11,seagate's big bug

thank u for ur reply sir.. yes i did a quick format and it took just abt 45 min to install the whole xp sp2.. but the real thing is that im not sure now if there are actually bad sectors or not :( even after starting xp, i tried formatting the remaining partitions using NTFS(disk managment window) but it hanged while 11%.. later when i tried a quick NTFS format it formatted successfully and it is running smoothly just as new..
so by doing a quick format and installing xp, will xp crash in the future?
plz help!!!
If the drive formats and you can install with Quick Format, does that not solve the problem? The quick format simply erases all the file location data (as though there were no files there) but actually leaves the files in place and allows the data to be overwritten. The "long" format actually erases all the data on the drive. With a 160 gigabyte drive, this can take a good while to accomplish. How long did you allow it to go?
