Hi, I have a 1990 subaru legacy. a few weeks ago my radio and all electronics when dead while driving. once parked i had to jump it to drive to les shwab. they tested my batter and said i was good to go and nothing was wrong. a week later same thing happend. i didn't have time to fix it so it sat for a few days. next time i tried it it worked for about a quater mile before radio went out again and the car stalled and died. I towed it to my mechanic and he charged my battery and i was good to go again. now a week later, my battey light comes on while driving and my lights dim down, when the battery light goes off, everything is back in full power, then it died two nights ago. some sort of charging system problem. alternator was tested and it charging fine and grounds seem to be fine. don't know whats up. should i get a new battery?
Might be due to the battery being bad and may need replacement but if the battery is holding a charge then it might be due to a short out in some place

Last night I checked the battery and it was still good. I disconnected and then reconn ected both terminals and that brought the power back. When I turned the key the power went out again. I repeated the procedure but did not turn the key. Instead, I took off the knee bolster and tried to wiggle the wires under the dash to see if I could find the source since it seems to be related to the ignition. Nothing cut the power so I started it up and it worked fine except for the check engine light which was flashing that says I have a misfire condition. I drove the car 25 miles to work this morning and will be taking it to the dealer for a better inspection.

I would have all the grounds checked. Sounds like it is not grounding properly. This will in turn not allow the battery to charge correctly and will make other electrical devices to operate incorrectly. For example the body ground if not good it will try to find another ground IE the shift cable. This is not designed to maintain a connection of amperage and will allow battery to die. Also will cause problem with cable and could fatigue it enough to break. Just check for good grounds on motor and body. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Really sounds like you need to make sure all the ground wires body and motor are good. Sometimes a poor ground will do that. The electricity will try to find any thing that it can to return the circuit. I even had one time the ground was going through the shift cable. Which destroyed the cable after a while. sounds like a open diode in alternator,when brake and battery lights come disconnect green plug on alternator,if the lights go out you've found the problem,very common problem with subarus
