Check your battery if it is properly seated. Try removing and re-install the battery. Else, your battery could be bad (not charging). How old is your Dell?
You may have the wrong AC adaptor, Dell is very picky when it comes to Power adaptors, it must be original OEM Dell for the laptop to recognize it, any after market no name brand even though it has the right specs and is made for your model will power your laptop but the circuit to charge your battery will automatically be closed
as i do not know what laptop we are talking about here i asume its not a notebook if it is the time is slightly lower (6-8 hours) a normal lap top 10 - 12 hours. some super batery laptops come with an own (long) guide how to keep the batery alive.
to keep the batery alive a long period of time charge it from 50% not when its at critical.
If u can take out the batery when you are using cable and its fully charged it also has a longer life time. or just take out the cable when its at 100% and recharge it when it gets to 50%
dont have your computer in the lap it can over heat the computer/batery and the lifte time gets even lower.
you update the firmware of the motherboard to correct this battery issue. Since it's more than a year it will be covered by the DELL hardware warranty if the problem is with the battery, but just to make sure that your existing warranty will not be voided call their helpline
Anthony,
Could be a failed battery, do you know anyone else with the same model who would kindly let you try your batery in their machine and theirs in yours?
The light indicator for the battery is; green-charging, yellow-battery failure, and red-charging system failure. The charging system failure happens when the power management chip fails. The pm chip regulates and controls the power input & usage, allows the machine to switch from AC to battery, and cotrols the charging. This will also cause the problem with the power button not workin or being hard to start. Unfortunately, the motherboard will have to be replaced in order to fix this.
check inside the laptop if your processor fan is working properly...sudden shutoff is usually cause when the censor in the board detects that the fan is not triggering to prevent overheating.
going to the nearest PC repair shop would be a good choice.
