When I turn on the CD player the tray opens. I hit "close" and it closes only to almost immediately open again, even if there's a CD in it. Needless to say, it won't play any CD's.
Idle several years. Now, after loading & told to close, makes grinding noise & keeps on opening-- even if told to play. Finally gives up, closes, and plays.
The service manual, even if it knows about this problem (what if it doesn't?), is available--for $18. Having done a fair amount of troubleshooting on my own equipment; don't mind opening the unit and looking first if someone says I have a good chance of seeing what to do.Idle several years. Now, after loading & told to close, makes grinding noise & keeps on opening-- even if told to play. mine is doing the same thing- it makes the spinning sound that tells me it is trying to read the CD, then "open" pops up on the display, and it comes sliding out. Doesn't matter if the tray is full, empty, part full...mine is doing the same thing- it makes the spinning sound that tells me it is trying to read the CD, then "open" pops up on the display, and it comes sliding out. If you open the mechanism you will see a motor that gives the force to the rest of the mechanism to open and close the door. The mechanism is been driven by the motor with a "plastic wire" (my bad english...). Replace this on with another one a little bit smaller in size and you will be done. (it is a special one and you can find this only in the electronic parts shops).
Have fun (with my bad english???? xexexe!)

The gears have probably come out of sync, meaning the tray is riding on the limit switch. You need to remove the deck, dismantle and re-sync the drawer mech. Check the limit switch isnt bent, it's quite flimsy
My unit closed immediately upon opening since like 1 day after the warranty ran out. It bothered me. I finally tore it apart and this fixed it.
Take the cover off. As you are facing the front of the player, the blue sensor switch that controls the tray will be on your left in the middle of the carousel. Push button to open tray and locate it as the tray opens. Grab the tray and also the carousel and hold them so you can see the little blue switch. Use a tiny screwdriver or toothpick or other slender device to "flick" the switch fully forward and backward several times. Let go of the tray and try the button. If it still closes immediately, repeat the flicking. Try it again.
Dear friend, my sony dvd drive tray opens and closes itself, it is mostly a problem related to hardware. in my case I removed the IDE Data cable connected to the dvd drive and reconnected it again. now my dvd drive works well, I think the problem was the IDE data cable, may be a loose contact.due to this loose cantact,a jung signal goes to the dvd drive, which opens and closes the tray frequently without our knowledge.
Problem:
I also have a bose Lifestyle 48, and the same problem has happen to me where the DVD player would not open,
Solution:
Unplug the unit, Wait a few seconds, after plugging the power back in, immediately hit eject so that the player does not have time to spin up and try to read the disc again
likely yes. does not sound like coincidence. try this: search ebay for an AS-IS item for $1 and use it for part-swapping. first to swap-the main circuit board holding the micro chip.
