I haven't seen one take that long to boot unless it is doing a check disk or something similar during boot but usually it show you that activity instead of the boot screen.
The virus thing is concerning.. It could be a virus. If you have a virus scan recovery CD, maybe boot/scan with it just to make sure there are no viruses.
If it isn't doing a check disk it could be a disk problem. I'd try booting into safe mode and backing up your important files to another drive. Then doing a check disk.
If it still doesn't find anything it, it could be a defrag issue. You could try that and depending on how big the drive is it could take a while.
Lastly, you could use your windows recovery disk/partition and do a recovery of windows because if it isn't a virus, something has to be wrong with the windows install for it to be taking an hour.
You are going to need a clean boot up disk. You will have to get one mailed to you or you will have to use another computer to download one. This will get you back into a point that you can do a windows restore. This is going to get rid of all programs and start you fresh. I do, however, feel that you disk drive is going out or already shot. You should do a Chkdsk on it. (check disk). This will tell you if it is a hard drive error or not.
The Recovery disk could be damaged or corrupted. The reason you are getting the Ethernet controller error your laptop can not find an operating system on the drive. With the aspire try ALT-F10 when you power on the system it will take you to a system restore partition. This will only work if the Hard drive is working. And it will wipe your drive so if you did not have any backups well you will lose all data on the disk.
If you don't have your manual, get it from Acer website. Just run the recovery program and follow the instructions. This is just like formatting, it will overwrite the HDD. For you this should be fine, and even formatting is useless. So Follow the Manual.
I have read problems about erasing, if you don't make a extra
partition the recovery system will flag out. Seen the second disk error
out and not finish, now you have no laptop.
Read about people who needed a new HDD and put it in and couldn't get the recovery disk's to work.
Like I said, formatting is useless anyway, the only true way to clean a hard drive HDD is to use programs that zero write the drive. But either way, if you format or erase, you can risk not getting the recovery to work.
If you are worried about malware (virus, trojan) Get Bitdefender or Avira, they have a free virus program. Then if you like it, when you can but it.
These are in the top 5 for today's Anti-Virus. What ever you do don't use AVG.

Reformatting a computer will reset it to the factor image, all data must be backed up or it WILL be lost. There are several reasons to reformat a hard drive. A few reasons include but are not limited to: driver issues, virus, cleaning up, getting rid of the computer, etc. Step 2Recovery Disk Creator Every new windows vista owner should know that the new computers are not supplied with recovery disks anymore. The manufacturer allows the user to create one set of disks upon the purchase of a new machine. It is important to create the disks early as driver issues and viruses may arise. In order to create recovery disks on windows vista you want to click on the start menu. Next, type in recovery in the Start Search option area. Next, click on recovery disk creation and follow the process. It will require that you have about 3 dvds or about 7 cds to create the recovery disks. REFORMATING HARD DRIVE!
Once the recovery disks have been made reformatting windows vista is quite simple. Insert the recovery disks into the cd/dvd tray on the machine. You are now going to want to turn the computer off. When the computer has turned off, go ahead and turn it back on. A screen should pop up asking you whether you want to boot from Hard Drive or Disk. Choose the disk option. After you make it this far it is a downhill process. Next you follow the on-screen instruction make sure you reformat the machine, not recover it. Good Luck :0)
