Samsung DVD-R4000 not recognizing DVD-R discs

It will play discs but won't recognize the discs for recording. These are the same DVD-R discs on which I've recorded over 20 times, yet now I keep getting the message the it can't record on the disc. I've tried 10 different ones from the same package. I did clean it with a DVD disc cleaner, but that didn't help. Any ideas?

As a last resort you can try a firmware update if there is one but don't hold your breath. Unit may simply have lost ability to record and not be able to playback. Not uncommon - happens.

SOURCE: DVD recoder not recording

I had this problem with my R120, it first wouldn't record and eventually wouldn't play, just gave either an error message or "wrong disc.' Then, another DVD player I own did the same thing.

What worked? I opened them both up and swabbed the laser lens with alcohol and then the clean end of the cotton swab. Now both work like a charm. I figure that all the dirty rental DVDs lowly drop dust and gunk and over a few months the build-up caused failure.

Just to be safe, I also used canned air to remove from inside the unit, around the circuit board and on the lens.

I'd advise leaving the unit unplugged for a day or more to let any stored energy drain and if you're not familiar with safety procedures, take it to someone who is.

SOURCE: Recording on Samsung VR375

Sony is not a good brand for buying DVD's. One option for you with the sony discs will be to try it in a computer and see whether it reads the disc. Also you can try using formatting using a software program like nero and see whether the samsung can recognize the disc.
Next time buy good quality discs...look up some reviews on the net.

SOURCE: dvd will not record

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, try to clean the lens using a CD disc cleaner. Additionally, verify that your blanks are either DVD-R or DVD-RW.

Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: I have a problem with Samsung DVD HR735.

I have had his problem several times. The fan pulls in dust at a rate of knots. The optics are so sensitive that a speck will cause the proble. What I do when this happens is to get a can of air cleaner and blow out the dust from the optics. Now look, most of you people are savvy. However, here are a few caveats for the uninitiated.

1. Ensure you have unplugged it first before removing the cover and don't touch the power board.
2. Dont hold these air cans upside down or sideways because if you do then you will squirt sub zero degrees liquid 'whatever' onto the lens (very bad).

After unplugging, just undo the 5 screws and take off the lid. The optics section is in the very middle of the dvd transport component (there's a ribbon attached to it). Blow this out with the air can a.k.a 'air duster' (available at most electronics shops or online). Replace the lid and try a dvd that didn't work before. If it fails, redo the job.

Hope this helps,

Batpuppy

Samsung dvd player does not read dvd disc.it reads "no disc".

I also have a Samsung Dvd player. If it is a dvd you burned yourself it may not recognize the disc. If you have loaded a purchased or rented disc and it still won't load, I would say the head is dirty or the unit is defective. I would try a head cleaner first.available at most electronics stores If that doesn't work you probably will need to send it in for repair.
good luck

When I put a DVD-R into the DVD-R 155 recorder to copy a TV program after a few minutes of the blue disc at spinning at the top right of my TV screen the disc is ejected with the message 'disc cannot be...

This is a Samsung DVD recorder - I've had the exact same problem - By the way, don't you mean "this disc cannot be recorded" ? These DVD recorders are known to reject certain type of discs.

* Have you updated your Samsung with the latest firmware ?
http://www.samsung.com/ca/support/download/supportDown.do?group=&type=dvdplayers&subtype=recordable&model_nm=DVD-R155&disp_nm=DVD-R155&language=&cate_type=all&dType=D&mType=FM&vType=&prd_ia_cd=03010300&model_cd=&menu=download

Follow the instructions carefuly and please understand the risks involved in flashing your drive - Do not interrupt the process, it can take long.

* here are the brands of DVD-R I have used successfuly with this recorder int he past:

Taiyo Yuiden DVD-R 4x / 8x (the optical drives used in those recorders are outdated, their writing strategies are never up to date and may not recognize some type of discs)
Maxell DVD-R 4x / 8x
Verbatim DVD-R 4x / 8x

Try another blank disc - maybe it will accept it - if it keeps rejecting all your blank DVD-R no matter what brand, you have a bad drive inside your recorder - the samsung recorders are **** - I have ever since gotten rid of that piece of **** and now use a Sony HDR-780 HDD/DVD recorder, uses pioneer components and is great !

Avoid those lens cleaners - they can do more harm than good!

I hope this helps.

Try different brands of DVD-R, avoid the cheap generic **** - drives like best Taiyo Yuden & Verbatim media id codes - they should recognize Maxells, verbatims, sony, taiyo yuden, ritek. if it keeps spitting out all discs you use, you have a defective unit. The latest firmware on that drive should also help !

Good luck :)

Not sure, but could be as simple as switching to a dvd-rw disc. Not all recorders recognize all formats.

SAMSUNG DVD R120 error EC:0207

I had exactly the same problem -- error message of "This disc can be neither played nor recorded. Please check the disk [EC:0207]" after the machine had been working fine for a year. I downloaded the latest firmware from the Samsung website, burned it to a CD-R disk (took three tries until the DVD Recorder recognized the disk -- worked when I used Rocio CD Creater software), then loaded the firmware updates to the DVD Recorder. On the Samsung website you can retrive the firmware update instructions as well. I had to perform the firmware upgrade several times until it successfully updated both the system firmware as well as the disk firmware. After successfully updating both, the Recorder now recognizes the DVD-R disks and I was able to resume recording. I have however, noted some choppiness with the playback of the newly recorded disks. Other than that, the firmware upgrade successfully resolved the problem.
