Horizontal lines and shadowing appearing when I print colour pages, but not b&w ones, which print perfectly. Please help!

I've just changed all four toner cartridges (genuine HP). Printer worked perfectly before. I've tried several cleaning pages and calibrations, but no improvement.

Go to printer settings/options and navigate to the color tab. See if you can find a setting which allows the printer to use only color cartridge, change this setting to use both cartridges.

Welcome to Fixya

Hi. Since you already tried and test all major troubleshooting that should fixed the problem, and yet still geting same result. I that suggest that you need replace the Printhead. In most cases, cleaning the printhead by soaking it to a warm water for about 1 1/2 hour would clear/break the solid debris that is clogging the printhead. Try that first before getting a new printhead.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Horizontal line on printed page

When you use the flatbed the copy is perfect because the ccd sensor is under the glass cover and obviously is free form dust/ dirt.
On the other hand if you use the feeder the ccd sensor is located in between the roller assembly (not sure exactly for this model).
This means that the page is scanned by the ccd in the feeder, any dirt on the ccd will appear as a black line. I assume that you are feeding papers from the side and not from the top that is why you get a horizontal line.

A quick test to see if the ccd sensor is dirty is to feed the paper from the top side to the feeder. If you get a vertical line it is a proof that your ccd sensor needs to be cleaned.
The worst case is that the sensor in the feeder assembly has a tiny spot that is damaged and it is causing the black line.
So , first try the test, then open the feeder assembly, locate the ccd and clean it. Hope that this helps.

I've purchased my canonE500 a week ago.......colour copy's not good

Try with the adjustment settings either in the printer or in your system. If the print quality is still low, Replace the printer. You may have warranty replacement.

Line across the page

  1. Make a copy by using the platen mode and ADF.
  2. Send a print from your PC or print out the Counter list from User tools/counter button.
  3. Try printing one colour at a time - Black, Cyan, Yellow or Magenta.
If when printing, there is no line across the pages, so you need to clean the optics mirrors and exposure glass.
If the line appears in both 1 and 2 mentioned above, you have the fuser roller or drum damaged.
If the line appears in all colour prints, check the fuser or transfer belt.
If it happens only with one particular colour, check that drum unit.

Good luck and please rate me, thanks.

Horizontal lines

Depends on whether the "lines" are colored or just blank areas missing in the print . If it is blank areas , then most likely the laser scanner is dirty and the glass needs to be cleaned . If it is colored lines , then you most likely have a defective drum .

Colour lines across the page

Hey Paul, Can you post a scan of the printed paper? It may help diagnose your problem. The most common cause of lines accross the page is either the PhotoConductor Unit or the 2ND BTR Assy.
