Question about DISH Network DVR-625 DTV Receiver / 100-Hours Video Recorder
I'm experiencing a problem with my Dish Network VIP 722 DVR. When playing back a recorded program, it freezes for a while, and then finally "catches up" and continues playing. I've also been needing to reset it more frequently due to just complete locking up.
In the system info details, my Values all seem normal except #7 is -2...is that related to a problem, and will Dish offer me a fix/replacement?

You more than likely are 100 percent correct.This is often the cause of the issue you had. The good news is that once the new receiver is in place you normally will not have any other issues as this receiver model is very reliable. One thing to consider is that Dish has some HD receivers available e.g. 222 etc that are non DVR but can act as a DVR unit with an external hard drive connected to the USB expansion port. This option gives you greater control of your recordings and eliminates the monthly DVR fee. There is a one time fee of 39.99 to make the USB port active but within the normal 24 month contract period that customers are often under one will have recovered all of the cost a the hard drive and the port activation fee. Just fodder for thought.

We have had the exact same problem with two Dish VIP 722 DVRs. The first exhibited the exact same issue with freezes and audio going out of syncy, this then progressed to a freeze when the entire HDD crashed and the DVR capabilities would not work (still operated as a receiver). Dish were nice enough to offer 1 day of compensation and magnanimously covered the cost of shipping, they were unsympathetic to asking for 1 month of service to be waived as we'd lost a month of recordings of our favorite TV shows which we'll never be able to catch up on (Lost, Desperate Housewives...)
Dish also made it seem like our unit/our problem which was preposterous.
We're now on our 2nd DVR and just 1 month in it started to exhibit the exact same issues - freezes/audio out of synch.
HEAT COULD BE THE ISSUE
Our DVR unit has been in an enclosed Pottery Barn cabinet with a glass door. As a result a potential cause is heat. If you go to Menu > 6 > 2 you can get to Diagnostics and Counters. Page down to the Hard disk temperature diagnostics. We were getting High 138/Avg 129/Low 122.
We've since taken the unit out of the cabinet and the temperature avg is below 120. We're still getting freezing though.
Dish made no efforts to tell people to keep their units cool or in places where air can circulate.
I think Dish really needs to issue a recall and pay to have better fans put in these units. People should be warned about these 622 and 722 units.

I have had 4 VIP 722 units over the past year. Each and every one of them begins to lock up completely about 60 days after recieving them. The picture freezes & no sound. They never reboot themselves, so I have had to do it manually by unplugging them. My recent 722 is their 722k unit. I was told that I should not have any more problems. WRONG! Again, alomost 60 days in, The lock ups continue and still no clear reason as to why this is happing.
I've been given the following excuses by DN:
Bad Outlet (power)
Corrupt Software, etc
Whats funny is that DN is the one that has done ALL of the installations, servicing etc. None of the recievers have been placed near any heat producing items (TV or other electronics), They've been out in the open, never enclosed.
What I have noticed is that when these lock ups occur, is that when I check the Hard drive temps, they range anywhere from 114* to as much as 140*. However, what all 4 units have in common is the 140* temp. Since I work for IBM in theiir stress test facility in Charlotte, NC, Like many other electronic facility, there is a stress temp bench mark of 160*, at which point, if a unit is going to fail, it will be at the sustained temp of 160*. And since all 4 units share the same exact 140* temp, I'm inclined to believe that the 140* temp is their (DN's) bench mark heat stress test bench mark.
The Units I've had, including this one, mainly have been from 114* to 126*, with an average of 118*. So basing this upon the above, It is very possible that the ventelation could be causing these lock ups, as computers and most electronics, are designed and require to be opperated in no more than 100*, internal temp.

Unplug your receiver box from the electrical outlet for 15 seconds. Then plug the receiver back in, and press the power button on the front panel of your receiver box. Wait for at least 2 minutes for your receiver to power back on. Then it would show you the attention 015 acquiring satellite signal. Wait for the progress to reach 5 out of 5. Then attention 330 would show or the downloading program guide. Press select to momentarily cancel the download and see if you have a picture. If you have a picture, try to use the DVR functions. If they work perfectly fine, press guide on your dish remote followed by 999 then select. It would resume the download of your programming guide.

I am sorry to hear of your issue and I wish I was able to bear better news but I am afraid that once there is an issue with the internal hard drive there is no way to retrieve the information off of it using common methods such as using on screen prompts or at least that is what technical support has stated.I am sure you already know that Dish charges a one time fee of 39.99 to make the expansion USB port active so that what you are asking is possible. If you have not paid the 39.99 yet I would call customer service to see that if you do so and the receiver is downgraded to a non dvr unit would they transfer that fee. I expect they would not and my suggesting that is that on a non dvr unit I know you can access the information on the hard drive if the receiver is malfunctioning. I know you are probably very frustrated to say the least right now but if you are interested is discovering other possible set up configurations Dish offers a Sling box which is integrated with your internet connection and is very fascinating with the possibilities it provides. When you bring up your guide look at the top of the screen and you will see the LIST: if this says ALL HD then press the guide button until you see ALL SUB or a menu and select ALL SUB. If your guide keeps changing by itself its possible to have remote interfence since you have a UHF remote, especially if you also see channel changes as well. Try setting the guide and go from there.
