Question about KLH R3100 Receiver

1 Answer

KLH R3100 My buddy was hooking up some speakers to his KLH receiver, and possibly without looking at the volume control... which may have been cracked to the top... turned on his system. He now does not get any sound from the speakers and has a display on his receiver that shows a picture of a speaker with a X over it. Any thoughts?

When i tunr my KLH R3100 it gives me an error massage that says PROTEC then powers down. i thought that it was because of poor ventalation but it has pleanty were it is set up. thanks

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts and overloads by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections as a root cause for intermittent shutdown.

The reciever volume will not ajust .. It is fixed at one set volume

Volume controls today are not potentiometers anymore. Manufactures use devices called encoders. When you spin the encoder it sends a binary signal to a decoder chip that will in turn increment or decrement the volume. Either your decoder chip is bad or the encoder itself needs replaced.

Hitachi SR-2000 receiver's right speaker connection does not work

The SR-2000 has fuses for both left and right outputs. Make sure neither are blown. Otherwise this receiver has a STK 463 integrated chip that controls the output for both channels. When replacing the STK-463 it is also acceptable to use STK-465.
