You have a bad alternator. Get the alternator checked, the alternators in 98 cavalier require at least 13 to even start the car off of battery power. The alternator is what charges your car's battery while you are driving. if you have bad alt then your jumping the car is pointless cause it won't harge your battery at all it just kick starts the engine with power from the other vechile. If the alternator is showing at the very least more than 15 when its tested time for a new one. They should run about $90-110, it's an easy do it yourself installation to. Good Luck!!!

SOURCE: I have 2001 Tahoe battery

Normally when the fuel sending unit is the issue, the battery will be affected if there is a short in the circuit but that would cause fuses to go out and you may not start the car until the fuses and the short are fixed. Check the voltage of the battery if it is around 12.7v. It should still be good.

As for the fuel it could be he ignition system or the fuel sending unit (that is the fuel pump and the electronics that go with it). I would check first the ignition system. That is the distributor coil and the cables that go with it. Check for loose wires or loose connections. The distributor would send signal to the ECU to tell the pump to start sending fuel. Check also the pump. If you can bypass the relay and have the fuel pump connected directly to the battery to test if it will work. If it does, check the relay and the wiring otherwise your pump may be bad. It could also just be a fuel filter that needs to be replaced.

If you have access to a scanner it would be best to use it and see if errors are retrieved. If there are errors it would help you identify the issue accurately.

SOURCE: 96 s-10 when driving my volt gauge goes up down

This a sign of the charging system at fault.......i would check with a multimeter at the battery....and when the vehicle is running/idling, it should be between 13.8 and 14.2 volts.......if this is not the case, either the alternator needs to be replaced, or wiring may ned to be checked......

SOURCE: 2002 chevy cavalier gauges not working - battery

Start the car. remove the cluster fuse from the fuse panel to the left of the dash. Wait 5 seconds and reinsert the fuse. It should be fine until you replace the battery again.

03 van wont start ,battery dead, gages going buserk . I hear ground might be bad ? can i change to a more convenient cable or do i need to stick to specs .?

Have you tried charging the battery or getting a jump? If a battery goes dead and you try to start the vehicle the low voltage and draw can make gauges go haywire.

2002 ford ranger start engine truck run for 5 minutes an shuts off then i have to jump start truck battery is dead bad alternator or battery

taking the battery leads of a running alternator is one sure way of destroying the alternator
if you think a battery is dead you have it load tested and replaced if it doesn't meet the test
what you should be doing is taking the vehicle to an accredited auto electrician and having the battery load tested and the alternator and voltage regulator professionally tested for proper operation

My sons1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee had the gauges light on and would not start like battery was dead. Had it jump started and it started. When he put in park it stalled jumped again and worked.

Sounds like a charging system problem and the alternator may not be working. The gauge light will come on if the charging gauge is showing low so you will look at the gauges. Have the battery and charging system tested

Had a dead battery Thursday a.m. got a boost. Took it to have the battery tested. Guy told me it was 5 years old, testing not bad but recommended a new battery with winter coming. Today. dead battery...

There is a switch above the break peddle that is adjustable for the break lights. This is running your battery down that is why the gauges are jumping. Change the battery.. If it is 5 years old draining it dead will kill the cells. Hope this helps.

1995 dodge stratus keeps going dead in driveway. I jump it off and let it run 15 mins to charge battery up. Turn off and crank right up, but the next day it is dead again.

With engine running used a voltmeter and check voltage at battery, you will be checking alternator out put voltage, should have a reading of no less then 13.0 volts, if less bad alternator, the reason it keeps going dead is that the car is using the battery to run it .till the battery has no more power, then you jump it and the battery is charge up again and will run again till it goes dead again.

Mitsubishi Magna GLX 1993 jumpstarting sets off alarm!

Is the alarm factory fitted, cheap, or a top of the range.
the factory alarm you can pull the cable of the horn untill you get the car started.
there are some alarms that go off when there is a voltage change, and some will keep going for a couple of minutes if the battery is dead flat untill there is power to equilze the power abit,
and some alarms have a key over ride in the siren.
if its a cheap alarm take the battery of and charge it,(the alarm will cut out as soon as the battery is disconnected.
~dont jump start from a dead flat battery, as it can cause a lot more problems with the electrics, leave another car running with the jump leads on for at least 5 min first.~
