Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.
I'm sorry to hear your Dyson vacuum is working intermittently. In order to help further, we'd need to know exactly which Dyson Animal model you own. If you can reply to let us know which model you have, I'm sure we can help.
Alternatively, if you call us on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US), our experts will be happy to take you through some quick diagnostic checks, and should be able to help resolve the issue for you.
Best wishes,
Jack

I suggest you check the hepa filter for black soot. If it is black and yucky then the motor is probably burnt out. Check out the guide at www.tasweb.org for instructions on how to fix it.

I had a similar issue. I called Dyson. Hey why not, the number is right on the from of the machine. SO IS the beater bar on/off button, right next to the big red on/off switch. It does have a safety off when something jams the bar from rotating so the motor doesn't burn out. I also removed my sock and on restarting the thing, the beater bar would motor was not turning on. I thought the reset would be inside but no, it is right outside in plain view, which I didn't see either. It is a grey button opposite the big red on/off switch. Boy did I feel dumb after that phone call!

you may have a broken belt. Bad news regarding all Dyson's. You can't replace just the belt your self. You have to purchase a new belt assembly which includes the gears. And it wont be cheap. I would call it a design flaw but i am sure that dyson calls it a profit scheme.

If this model has a brush control - i.e a roller at the side of the model which controls brush to spin or not, then its a protected brush model - therefore even if the drive belt is intact the Dyson would have to be repaired by a service personnel or professional. The brush protection isn't able to be taken apart and sounds like it may well have slipped off due to tension.

there is an overheat stat which turns motor off. possible cause is filters blocked or a blockage elsewhere - no air flow and the motor overheats
