I recently bought an unlocked 16gb iphone that is 3G. Everything was working fine until I connected it to itunes to update the software. After the screen asking me if I want to sign up with AT&T the phone locked up. How can fix this problem ? I don't want to pay a technican to fix this.

Unforunatly when you hook the phone up to Itunes it updates and relocks itself. This is Apple and At&t's way of keeping it locked. You are going to have to get the phone unlocked again.
It looks like your iPhone just needs to be activated. As long as an active simcard is inserted and you connect it to iTunes, it should automatically activate itself after a few minutes. If it fails with an active simcard, you may have a reception issue. Maybe a tech savy friend can do it for you. If you want to have somebody else do it for you there are third party iPhone Repair Services.
