Primary cause of hard cold start: operator error.

Open gas tank vent, pump primer bulb until it is firm, raise hi-idle lever full up, push the key in and hold it in while turning it to "start".

If you can flood your engine with the primer bulb, then your carbs need rebuilding. Pump the bulb until it is firm - that fills the carb bowls - they have a float valve that closes when full. This is true of every carbureted 2-stroke outboard ever made.

"Pumping the throttle" is useless - these are not automotive carburetors - all it does is open and close the butterfly valves.

Your motor does not have conventional choke plates; instead it has a primer solenoid, which opens a valve and allows fuel to drain into the cylinders to richen up the mixture for cold starts. You should hear the solenoid "click" when you push the key in.

Bad compression leads to hard cold starts - you should have at least 100 PSI in all cylinders, and the lowest needs to be within 5% of the highest.

If you have good compression and spark on all cylinders, the primer solenoid actuates, and the fuel line holds pressure, then you need to remove your carburetors, dissasemble, soak overnight in carb cleaner, blow out passages with compressed air (or aerosol carb cleaner), reassemble with new kits (including new o-rings, gaskets, and float valves & seats), reinstall, link & sync, and adjust slow-speed mixture

Carbs probably need to be cleaned and re-built. Common problem in outboards that havent been run in a while

SOURCE: I have a 50 hp 1975 Johnson outboard. When I turn

There is a switch in the control box that locks out the start unless you are in neutral. Open the box and put in a new switch, this is a safty device to keep it from starting in forward and throwing you out of the boat. Jim OMC retired Mech

My 1994 50hp Johnson outboard motor will not shut off with the key switch my question is does this system have a diode that could cause this problem

Check your wiring at the engine. When your key is rotated you will have a complete circuit which powers your accessories, motor, and if that circuit is broken your engine should shut down .. So either your key circuit to the engine is staying powered from a faulty ignition switch or someone didn't set up the wires properly.

Does a 1977 Evinrude 70 horsepower engine hav a charging system?

The 70s Johnson or Evinrude outboards of similar sizes did not have any charging system. I had an old Johnson 50HP (key injection) mounted on an 18Ft Zodiac and I needed to remove and recharge the battery once every couple of weeks. Keep the battery dry and the contacts well greased.

Hi got a 1997 johnson outboard is a denso w24fsr spark plug ok for this motor cheers shaun

Stick with the NGK or try a Champion. A Johnson outboard is the only brand motor that will perform well with something besides a NGK.
