I Think There is paper jammed in the printer.
Action:
Press button A, open the front cover and remove the jammed media.Make sure that there is no paper jammed in the paper trays.
Machine Error 78 indicates a mechanical malfunction of the Brother MFC-8840D. 78 represents the error number. You have to contact Brother Customer Service 1-877-BROTHER.
With my Brother 8840D I have had paper jams that when cleared would not delete from the display nor would the machine operate until I unplugged the machine for around eight hours. I guess it is a sort of reset or reboot.
Try openning the front cover remove the drum and toner remove the toner from the drum, close cover, turn printer off and on. Then reinstall drum and toner.
Most likely their is paper in it yet you can'lt see it, usually I noticed problems like this My suggesting is call a Service Tech and Have him remove the Fuser unit and check for paper in that area.
