Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Almost always, your described problem indicates a charging issue. This points to the bike's battery not charging. Suspects would be:

  • voltage regulator (most likely);
  • connectors to voltage regulator (likely). Check/clean corrosion/burnt marks;
  • stator and/or the wires coming from it (least likely).
A CDI is a capacitive discharge ignition. This is an electronic module that fires the ignition coil.

Parts would depend on where you are. Often, other riders would provide information for parts source.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

1995 Yamaha SRX 400 Monoshock - How do you check the engine oil level. I.E. with the bike level or leaning over on its side stand?

Mike, engine oil level on motorcycles are normally checked with bike on level ground on center stand (not leaning or tilting in any direction), or have an assistant hold bike straight while level is checked.

My virago xv535 is having consistent charging problems. I have changed the stator, put a new battery in but the bike will not run when the lights are on. Do I need to change the rectifier? or is there...

you will need a volt meter across the battery,
it should read around 12v with the engine stopped and rise to around 13-14v with the engine running.

If the reading doesnt rise when it starts, then it isnt charging and the regulator\rectifier is the next step.

If you are getting a voltage rise and turning the lights on stops the bike, then there may be a problem in the switches, on \off high \low

Bike will not start or stay running on a full charge battery/bought brand new battery, still same promblem,jump bike off,will crank ,ride bike for 30 min. park bike, leave bike running,lights start's to...

sounds like the problem is your battery is not charging when you are riding. The most common cause is a faulty regulator / rectifier. Contact a motorcycle wreckers for these parts, or your yamaha dealer.
Easy way to test is, when your bike is running, and the lights start to dim, before the bike shuts down, using a volt meter, test the voltage at the battery terminals, should be about 14V. If faulty rectifier,no charge going in to your battery, then the reading will be low, about only a few volts. If you dont have a volt meter, then any mechanic shop can do this test for you. best to have this done before buying any parts.

Engine wont turn over at start

Hi, Do you have an alarm & Immobiliser fitted on your bike as these drain the battery on your bike very quickly? If so i would recommend removing your battery and fully charging it with a decent amp-age charger. If you have your garage attached to your house then i would definitely recommend purchasing a trickle charger and when not using your bike keep this plugged into the mains and you should not have this problem again. all motorbike shops sell these chargers If after this the battery goes flat again i would suggest purchasing a new battery. This is a common fault as most motorbikes sit in the garage through the winter months and if not kept on charge will deteriorate. Hope this helps.

No clutch

Yes this is evident in replacing engine oil to motorcycle engine.

Engine oil designed for automobiles isnt good for motorbikes as they offer additives for added "slipping". THis will cause your clutch to slip. Automobile Engine's oil system is separate from the clutch while motorcycle's clutch and engine fall under one oil system.

Use engine oil designed for motorcycles.
Solution: Buy and Engine flush, pour it to your crankshaft, run the engine for 5 minutes (idle) then drain. Replace with new motorcycle oil.

Make sure the new battery has fresh acid in the cells. I did the same thing with a battery I bought and forgot to add the acid and charge the battery up so my bike didn't start. Got distracted with the wife's todo list....

Power is draining form battery and isnt recharging.

could be either a short to ground, or a duff battery. i have a 650 v star and if i dont start my bike at least once a week then i will have to get the booster on it to get it going. my battery is less than a year old but i guessed i bought the cheapest one. it is fine when i ride it recharges but it will deplete over 2 weeks. if it is not charging when you ride then have your charging system checked.
