Sorry I dont know much about computers so my wording may not b correct etc. The problem is this - I have an Acer Aspire 5715Z with windows Vista. I have had it since about October. When I go in 2 my computer it is saying I have - Acer C: 482MB free of 32.5 GB file system NTFS but data D: 31.1 GB free of 32.2 GB
I tried downloading something and it's said I have no space. Why are things not saving in the other drive 2? and what do I have 2 do 2 fix this?
Thank you
I have since used this advice -
You need to backup and clear off some of your C: drive, most likely your machine is running much slower because of it (Windows requires more room for a proper cache).
But now my ACER C: drive still only has 5.30GB free of 32.5GB and DATA D: drive has 15.2 GB free of 32.2 GB
Does this not mean that I now have less space left overall?! I dont understand how I have so little space left in a relatively new computer?
Look first make habit of saving ur downloads to Drive D ok never save ur download s on drive Acer : C secondly let me tell u windows Vista is a bulky OS and it needs much space on hard drive thats why atleast 120 Gb is recommended for Vista it seems like u have an 80 gb hard drive Vista will work but it will take much of ur drive space as my Vista installation is around 39 GB now i dont know but it grows his size day by day thats why some ppl with less system resources go back to XP , u can free up more disk space by doing following:
go to http://www.ccleaner.com download ans install it run the cleaner and look for temp files that may be lying and occupying disk space.
2. Go to My Computer Right click on Acer C take properties click button Disk cleanup select files from all users let it scan ur hard drive and then it will present u with some temp files , hibernation files and thumbnail files and error reporting files check the boxes and perform the cleanup select all of them u will get some space press OK it will cleanup and delete these files and u will see some space freed up, in more options in the same windows u can also uninstall some progrmas on ur C drive which u installed and u no longerr want now u can un install them as well after that come out of it
3. Now go to My computer right click and take properties of Acer C now go to Tools Tab and select Defragment Now and select C drive and defrag ur drive this will take time after this correct free space will be visible to u after all cleaning steps
if u get enuff space u wanted then it is ok otherwise u can also take some space from the D drive and can merge into C drive if u want i can help u in that but i prefer changing ur hard drive as it is too small for a system like Vista , XP will give u no trouble on that drive
pls let me know and do rate me if i fixya problem

I also tried to free up space; per your advice above ,I will redirect things to the D drive, in the future. But for now I can't free up the space, to even download SP3.My internal C drive capacity is 19.5 GB, only has 195MB free. My D drive capacity is !9.GB,& free space of 4.21GB.I don't download video. I do have a 1000+ photos, on Picasa & ACDC,have to learn how to burn them to disk. I have XPpro, SP2, IE 6.& cable modem. I'm only half experienced, so I'm not sure what else you would need to know. I keep my Antivirus, Antispyware, & MS malicious malware removal tool scan updated, & run daily. My computer is slower, but still opening programs.I defragged Cdrive, didn;t help much. I need your help...Greatgrandma Bunny.
Some suggestions:
1) Run the disk cleanup utility. It will delete (if selected) temp files, temporary internet files and recycle bin files.
2) After that, if you use broadband to connect to the internet, go to your Internet Options. On the Advanced tab scroll down and check the box next to "Empty Temporary Internet Files Folder when browser is closed". This will keep you from building up a large cache of files.
3) In the Control Panel under Add and Remove Programs, I would uninstall any programs that you NEVER USE. Computers are usually loaded with things like AOL, games, trial versions, etc. that just take up space. Just be sure of what you are removing.
4) If you download much video, consider an external drive to save it to instead of your internal drives. Video files are very large and with only 60GB to start with, it could fill up quickly.
5) Another note: When you download something you are normally given a window to Save Run or Cancel. When you select Save, you have to designate where to save it to. You need to use the drop down menu and direct it to save to your Data D:\ drive. The purpose of saving to your Data drive is that, should you need to run a recovery/restore, the D:\ drive will remain intact.
Having said all that, I am not sure why your drives ended up as they did. I do not know what you backed up or copied to the D:\ drive, so it is difficult to diagnose. Hope this helps.
