I have a Kenmore refrigerator. Model 596.65234404, serial number ky3257801. Occasionally there is water forming puddles on the floor in front of the refrigerator. What maintenance procedure can I do to fix...

Hello,

That water is from the melting frost of the automatic defrost cycle. Their is drain in the freezer behind the back wall under the evaperator coil that is blocked, so instead of defrost water draining it's pooling in the freezer or in some case espically on models with the freezer on the top,the water is leaking from the freezer vents into the fresh food compartment.
The way to clear the drain is remove back plate and remove all ice build up and GENTLY make a small hole in drain through then totally flush w/warm water.
The exact location of drain is under the coil behind back freezer plate in the center

Good luck

I hope this helps

Neither the fridge or freezer side is working? what is the 1st thing to check the compressor sounds like it's running- could the defrost be stuck on or the mother board be bad?

Sure the first thing is to look inside the freezer and see if perhaps it is a defrost problem. That most times shows up as warming of the fresh food compartment and a layer of frost or ice layering the walls of the freezer with just near freezing temperatures. Most times people hear what they may think is the compressor running so I recommend that you pull away from wall and unplug, remove cover over compressor and feel top of compressor to insure that it has been running. If warm on top of compressor that will be OK but if cool or too hot to keep hand there we need to find out just what is going on. Most importantly you need to find Brand Name and Model Number=> Locating Model and or Serial Number GE has a way of locating models=> HERE

Puddles of water in the fridge

OK that sounds like Ice may be blocking the defrost condensate drain. I will need your model number to help me to identify your model better but can leave you with some information about water leaking inside the freezer or fresh food compartment. Sears use a model number found around your door frame and looks like this for example 312.56989 Be right back with some links, Thanks Sea Breeze

Water is leaking on the top shelves in my kenmore refriderator water is leaking on the top shelves in my kenmore I have water leaking onto the top shelf of our Kenmore refrigerator. I believe it goes into...

During the defrost cycle heaters inside the walls of the freezer turn on to melt the frost. The melted frost "water" is supposed to drain into a pan under the fridge where it will evaporate. I think the drain line from the freezer to this pan may be blocked. I'd also check the seal on the freezer door. If it's not sealing well it lets a lot of moisture into the freezer which means more water during the defrost cycle. I'd also recommend checking to make sure the ice maker is not leaking.

It appears the defrost drain inside freezer is blocked or the drain tube leading to pan near compressor is clogged I would unplug refrigerator and remove the back panel in freezer to examine the drain and get back with me to let me know what you find, also get model number for your refrigerator so I can help you better. Sea Breeze Look at following areas for the model number
  • Beneath Or Inside Food Compartment On Cabinet Frame
  • On Plate Lower Front Or Rear Of Cabinet
  • Beside Compressor Door On Right End
  • Near Rear Of Cabinet
  • Inside Liner At Top

Leaking water from kenmore freezer to refrig below

its possible that the drain pan behind the back freezer wall is clogged or coverd with ice, sounds like when unit goes into defrost melt water leaks under sides of drain pan and into fridge. unplug and remove back freezer wall if drain is covered with ice defrost the ice, can be prevented by loosely coiling a piece of solid copper wire around element and into drain slightly radiant heat during defrost should keep drain fromicing over. if drain is just clogged wth debris clean drain and you should be good to go, hope this helps you.

Our Whirlpool top freezer unit is leaking water into the refrigerator. The model number is ET21NKXGW01 and at the top of the inside of the fridge, water is draining out into the fridge. The defrosting...

We were able to fix the freezer water leak. We unscrewed the false freezer floor and the inside back panel. Ice had accumulated on the freezer floor and the defrosting drain was frozen. We removed the ice by using a blow dryer then poured boiling hot water onto the frozen drain hole. The frozen water in the drain pipe hole eventually melted and the water released into the defrosting drip pan at the bottom of the refrigerator. Problem solved. We no longer have water leaking into the refrigerator.

Freezer section of Kenmore Self Defrost Refrigerator Mfg. 4/07

What you have found as a model number may in fact, be a part number for the inner lining.
Check your owner's manual for the model number.

Check to see if your unit is equipped with a setting for humid/dry climates and if it is present, it should be set to correspond to yours.

The defrost cycle melts concealed, built-up frost, with an internal heating element.
That produces water that should normally drain through a hidden path down to the evaporation tray at floor level under your unit.

If the path is blocked, the water will find its way into the interior and refreeze wherever it lands.

Gaining access to the element and the drainage path can be a real pain in some refrigerators and requires removal of the liner of the freezer for access.

Good luck.

Defroster leaks

you have a cloged evap. drain. the rf is defrosting properly but with the drain be clogged the water has to go somewhere which is generally in the crisper draws on top and bottom models. two way to clear up this issue. turn rf OFF for at least 48 to 72 hrs. to allow the drain to de-ice or take matters into your own hands and take the back panel off of the freezer and using boiling hot water pour it down the evap. drain tube until it flows like you just flushed a tiolet
