My friend here has an Orinco wireless (router?)transmitter. The model is Lucent RG 1100. It works fine but would like to make it secure and possibly change the name (but not really that important). Can you help? Cleve

You should be able to see the 8 digit security PIN on the back of the side of the router. It will have three numbers , MAC, SERIAL and SECURITY PIN. it will be clearly visible if you see the label attached to the router.

Do you have a wireless router and have you configured the laptop with the wireless router's settings?

No it will not work you cannot connect a router to another router wirelessly and it will most likely not be detecting each other, routers are built to transmit internet signals from modems if you have a router and a computer but you do not have your own internet connection that will not work conencting to another router you will need USB Wifi Card transmitter/reciever to be able to connect to your friends wireless internet.

but if your friend only has a modem you can lend him your router and get a USB wifi transmitter/reciever to be able to connect to your router that is conencted to your friends modem this will work but will not work if you and you friend will both have a router creating a network.

By wireless transmitter, do you mean Router? If you set the router up with security, the passcodes have to match perfectly on both! Try setting` the router up with simple (or no) security, just to see if the router can communicate with the computer.

Contact the company and find out what the factory password is and then reset the router. That should alow you access to it.

First, make sure that the wireless network capability ofthe U-Verse RG is diabled (since you're using the Linksys for that purpose).

Second, make sure the ethernet cabel from the back of the RG connects to an LAN port on the Linksys (NOT the Linksys's WAN port).

Finally,disable the DHCP feature on the Linksys (since DHCP should be active on the U-VerseRG). Here's how:
1) Install the Linksys software on your computer and open your internet browser.
2) Type the URL 192.168.1.1 (default for Linksys access ponts).
3) You'll be asked to enter a username and password. The default is username "admin" and password either "admin" or [blank].
4) Once you've logged in, scroll down on the basic settings page (the one that loads automatically) to where it says Network Address Server Settings (DHCP). Click the radio button next to Disable, then click Save Settings at the bottom.

What you've basically done is make the Linksys another computer in your network, and the one that others will connect to the RG through.
