That's normal. The gba will play all three generations of game boy games. The start up screen that comes up is that of whichever cartridge you are putting in.
The game data for GBA SP games are held in the actually game cartridge itself. It is not stored within the GBA. If the data from the games has been deleted, he would have to restart each game from the beginning. There is no way to restore lost saved data once it is gone. you cant. they quit making them after the original nintendo DS came out. If your really desperate, then you could chek ebay, but I wouldnt reccomend it
