The problem began suddenly -- during a spin cycle -- and shook the thing so violently I thought it would punch through the floor. Turning the washer slowly by hand, it clunks once each revolution and seems to drop slightly. It feels like a soda bottle cap that you continue to turn after you've loosened it. It still turns smoothly and balanced (suggesting it hasn't completely broken or jammed). My guide doesn't diagram the inside so I don't know what might be happening.
Great analogy, sounds as if you have broken/stripped the tub block( its waht secures the inner tub to the outer tub) part number 389140, if you removethe agitator( a 7/16" bolt down the center of agitator) there is one more lock ring that isactually tightened down across the top of said "tub block"( usually need a specialty spanner wrench to remove, but have done it with a pipe wrench) after removing that lock nut the inner tub will release and the new tub block can be installed...
I had the same problem once. I have an opinion, not sure if it is an answer. when mine did that, I found out that i had filled it too full with clothes. or, it could be uneven...try evening your washer see if that helps you maybe? But, on the first problem, all i did was decrease my load sizes and it worked, so maybe that can help?
