I have a Curtis DVD1072 player. The remote control does not work

When I press ANY button on the remote control, the DVD disc tray opens or closes. Sometimes the drawer opens partway, hesitates, then travels back & forth, then closes. I've tried new batteries + turning the player on/off with the physical switch on the unit + pressing various remote button combinations. All (including on/off power buttons on the remote) = tray opens or closes.
Do I need to buy a new remote control? Can I buy one? Is the player itself defective? (It is out of warranty.)

My remote control to my Curtis 1072 DVD player doesn't work at all. I've done all the things to troubleshoot potential problems. The remote just seems dead. I would like to know where to purchase a new remote or find the name of a universal remote that could work with Curtis 1072.

From Curtis' website: "Q: Where can I purchase a replacement DVD battery?
Replacement portable DVD batteries can be purchased for $30 from Curtis International Ltd. Please mail a certified check or money order (payable to Curtis International Ltd) to 315 Attwell Drive, Etobicoke, Ontario M9W 5C1, ATTN: Customer Service Department. I want the code to play Zone 2 DVDs on my DVD which is set for 4

1) Turn on the player with no disc in the tray
2) Press the Open/Close button to open the tray
3) Press the info button, the firmware version shows up (
4) After the version info disappears, close the tray again by pressing the Open/Close button
5) At this point, it will show "no disc" at the top. Press the Info button again, and this will disappear. If the "no disc" does not disappear then try again by using the REPEAT button
6) Now type the code that applies for your region (R2 is 57538). A '2' will briefly show up at the top left corner
7) Now press 9, and 9 will show up in the top left corner
8) Power off the player, and turn it on again. You'll have a multi region player

R1 - 29334
R2 - 57538
R3 - 56732
R4 - 76884
R5 - 53814
R6 - 24462
