The model Elite 5x from Lowrance is a bit out dated, I currently have one on my boat, That model would require GPS signal to be able to read MPH unfortunately it does not. Not sure if they made a GPS puck for that model. That wire lead set can and probably is being used on a few different models that support that function. Hope that helps.. BTW I have had mine since 2013 and still works great. There is a GPS speedometer available through LOWE boats with 4 INCH bezel. I am a LOWE boat dealer, General Manager at Beacon Marine in Junction City KS.
Hey Les, Since you have replace both the unit and transducer, you have eliminated/diagnosed most of your problem.. Its in the wiring... sometime when I am in full GPS mode I get erroneous depth readings..?? Have you tried a different GPS module (the "puck")?
If it is connected to the boat motor check the voltage that is coming from the engine and clean the battery post. This solved the screen flickering.
If you don't want to do that just call Northstar customer support and see what they suggest. Phone (Toll-free) 1-800-628-4487 or (Direct)603-324-2042 That will get you better support.
The unit will give you speed over ground directly form GPS. there is a difference between Speed Over Ground (SOG) and ocean speed. Ocean speed will only be available from a paddle wheel type transducer.
If it works at low speeds fine but has problems at higher speeds, basically you need to lower the transducer down further as it is lifted by the boat at higher speeds, or is getting caught in the turbulence of surface water created at higher speed. Lower the transducer a half inch at a time and re-test.
Based on your description I would suspect that the internal memory battery is depleted and needs to be replaced. This battery is required to retain waypoint and route information when the input power is low or turned off. The battery is soldered onto the main circuit board and needs to be replaced by a technician having good soldering skills and access to instructions for the disassembly and reassembly of the unit. There is a list of dealers on the Northstar website. Review the list and make a couple of phone calls to see which ones will do bench work on this unit.
