A communications error usually means that there's a problem with the connection between the printer and the computer.

This could be because of a duff USB cable or something pulling on (and damaging) the connections. However I've also heard of this behaviour when using the SSC utility in an attempt to reset the waste ink counter which I'm guessing is what you're trying to do.

If you are based in the USA I'd recommend filling out the form for this utility:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/InkPadsForm.jsp

It does invalidate your warranty but the R220 is that old that you won't have anyway.

If that doesn't work then you could try looking for an adjustment utility but be warned they are a lot more complex and it's easy to bork your printer if you're now careful.

The R220 doesn't have a firewire interface.. USB only.

Epson R220 parts near end of life error

its a tweak with epson.... they have a counter there that intentionally stops it from working even through your printer is still in good condition.

there is an available driver that could correct that depending on the operating system you are using. i think if i maybe correct it only works with and o/s that is winxp.

the drivers name is inkpad reset utilty.

try to check the website www.epson.com/ipr for the inkpad reset utility

EPSON r360

Are you sure it is staurated or it just the printer showing the error. Apparently there is a usage timer in the printer firmware that will display this error after so many hours of usage. Epson has a small program to reset this error but warns that if the pad is saturated it may leak out onto you table/desk. My R220 displayed this error and I reset it with Epsons resetter program. If you are not sure of the pad, I would put something under the printer just in case it is saturated and leaks. I don't think you can buy replacement pads from Epson as they say the printer is disposable. I also don't know what material the pads are made of but I have never seen one overflo in all the years I have used Epson printers. There is always a first time so if I were resetting mine I would defininately put something under the printer to watch for leaking ink. The program to reset the ink counter is EpsonIPRUtility.A10.exe and is available at www.Epson.com
