Surround sound to work with sky+

Is it possible to watch sky tv using the surround sound on my Sony DAV S300?
Will an optical cable work between the dvd player and Sky+ box to enable this sound function?

  • mattbarton75 Feb 20, 2009

Am I best connecting the two with a optical cable? To be honest I'm not even sure if the DVD player supports an optical cable.

I think it should work if sky+ transmit surround sound signal.

  • Anonymous Feb 20, 2009

If it has optical input then it will give surround sound. you can connect normal RCA red-white audio cable in dvd player input to get surround sound in Amp Menu options.

The first two links you've probalbly seen before, they show conncections and connectors. I looked at pictures of your system and it would appear that the only input for video and audio is RCA. I think it has s-video for video only(s-video slightly better). The third link is the only way I can see to get what you are asking. It is an HDMI to RCA adaptor. You would use an HDMI cable out from your set top box to the adaptor then, RCA cables to your DAV-S300. It's the only way I can see. Hope this helps.

I have a sony dav-s300 , a Sharp Aquos tv, a sky box and a ps3. I can get them all to work but not in surround sound. Can you please advis how i can watch the dvd and the ps3 in surround sound. Is there a...

A stereo 2 phono lead input from a sky box will have dolby pro logic surround info on it (when its a surround programme of course)

The Sony should then process this and give sound on the centre and rears too.

The DAVS300 does'nt have an optic/coax digital input so you can't have dolby digital from an external source- only from its own DVD player

How do i connect to sky hd and sony kdl 40w 4710 and dav-is10 i have hdmi from skyhd to tv and hdmi from home cinema to tv what else is required as i cant get surround sound from tv

you need a Optical audio cable, run this from the back of your Sky HD box to the Surround sound. Not all Broadcast are transmitted in DD so press your i button on the sky remote and you will see this on the yellow bar above the program information if it is..

Might be worth running a set of White and Red audio cable from the HD box to the Surround sound as well that way you can just mute your telly and have the lot coming through the surround sound system.

Hope this clears things up for you

No suround when watching tv with sky + box,

You will need a DVD player with an optical output, as the sky engineer said. A Co-axial S/PDIF output could also work if your surround sound has that input, however not all units transmit surround encoded sound through the Co-Axial output. Only option really is to upgrade if that doesn't work

Sony Bravia Dav-HDX279W and comcast HDTV Cable box connection.

Like above, use an optical connection (need fiber optic cable) or a coaxial connection (single RCA cable). HDMI might also work, but I personally haven't checked. Connect the audio outs from the cable box to the audio ins on the home theater. The TV will only need a video connection from the cable box, as well as one from the home theater (for DVDs, onscreen menus).

This discussion can help you set up the universal remote.

Connect PS3 for playing/viewing blue-ray thru surround sound

I just finished setting up my system last night and was facing similar problems with sound/video from my PS3. The only option I could get working was to have the HDMI cable connected from the PS3 to the TV and then connect the Optical cable to the receiver for sound. I was under the impression that HDMI handles sound and video but for whatever reason the PS3 does not agree.

I have DTS sound and fantastic picture now through my PS3, hope this helps.

Cheers

Sony surround sound hookup

In short, the answer is: Hook up all three to each other. I have a Samsung DLP HDTV, and I was trying to hook up a Sony DAV-HDX500 home-theater system and a Comcast HD set-top box, but I found that the Sony user guide is helpful only for setting up the speakers. Most of what it had to say about HDMI and getting the TV sound or cable sound to go through the speaker system was wrong (or, at least, it didn't work for me). So, here's what I did. I connected Component video cables (Y/Pb/Pr out) from the Cable box to the TV (Y/Pb/Pr in), audio cables from the Cable box (audio out) to the Sony system ("SAT/Cable" audio in), and an HDMI cable from the Sony system (HDMI out) to the TV (HDMI in). This allows me to 1) watch DVDs with surround sound through the TV's HDMI source (when the "DVD" format is selected on the Sony system), 2) watch cable with surround sound through the TV's Component source (when the "SAT/Cable" format is selected on the Sony system), and 3) watch cable WITHOUT the surround sound, as I did before I ever had the Sony system. One item of note: When watching a non-HD channel with the surrond sound on, the audio is slightly out of synch with the video; thankfully, there's no such problem on HD channels. Anyway, I hope this helps. It drove me crazy for two days straight!

Connect PS3 for playing/viewing blue-ray thru surround sound

Connect the PS3 to your TV with the hdmi cable and to the surround sound system with a digital optical cable, then set your PS3 to output sound through the optical port (through the sound options menu) and you're good to go!
