you dont you might have a dirty or bad paper sensor there is also a chance the paper might be in the fusing area (where its hot) if u use a flashlight and look in that area you might see the paper at that point it needs to be taken apart
Open the speed dial panels (3) locate DATA REGISTRATION button. Press data registration, then press SET button twice, this should get you to DATE and TIME setting....use the number keys to adjust same then press SET when finished. Press DATA REG. button to escape from user settings.
Open all 3 One-touch Speed Dialling panels.
press Data Registration. press Set.
USER SETTINGS press Set
DATE & TIME press Set
use numeric keypad to enter month/date/year and then time press Set
To exit, press Data Registration or Stop
Not an expert on this model however, on most canon fax machines the plastic cover or panel on the keypad is a door. Opening this you should see descriptions for the keys one should say report. Press report to print and follow instuctions to get activity report.

Sounds like it got set to "immediate" transmission somehow, rather than "memory" transmission -might be as simple as a button on the operation panel, but I'm not a "canon" guy. You can get the manual here if you don't have one:

What a tank! Great machine. I have never tried to connect to a computer. What op system are you using? Windows Vista and maybe XP may not support this model. Look for undates. What cable are you using? I just checked with Canon and found this unit is supported by Win 95/98. A firmware update from Canon may solve it.
