My PS3 display is flashing...

I just bought a Japanese 20GB PS3. I have it plugged in via the component video cable and when the system is turned on, the icons on the menus flash on and off. This gets worse during gameplay. When I am playing a game, certain things in the game's environment flash. This also happens on DVD/Blu-Ray menus. However, the movies themselves play without a hitch. This problem also occurs when I hook the system up via HDMI.

On the XMB go to Settings ---> BD/DVD Settings ---> BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI). Turn that bad boy off.

Give that a shot.

Just bought a used ps3 and when I hooked it up to my sd tv via av it worked fine, but then when I went to hook up t up to my hdtv via av also it will not display any video or audio.

Make sure you are on the correct input, try purchasing component cables and using them(Has a red green and blue plug for video and red white plug for audio) make sure the AV on the TV works try plugging something else into it like a DVD Player make sure you switch your video setting to the correct format.

If its been reset it will originally not display video out HDMI, first try component cables. Then try this...
Be sure to backup your settings/games saves by doing a System > Backup on your PS3 or you may lose your game saves! Also, this is a last resort procedure prior to exchanging/returning to Sony.

1. Power Off the PS3 via the power switch in back and power back on w/switch.

2. Hold Power Button on the Front until you hear 3 beeps.

3. Then go through the initial setup and then run a full Format via System > Format. (will take approx 3 1/1 hours). You may need to have our AV cables ready if your using HDMI (in case HDMI isn't detected after initial reset).

4. Restore your back-up you made prior to doing factory/hard reset (optional, if you created a back-up).

Hopefully this will solve your freezing problems.

Problems/symptons that this appears to have resolved:

- Freezing when doing anything
- No harddrive activity
- Freezing when trying to use onboard keyboard or bringing up keyboard
- Game/movie disc freezes system

Sound but no picture on PS3 using AV3/4

if it's happening with your ps2 and your ps3 on teh same tv, try it on a different tv. if you're getting sound but no picture, tehn it's something with your cables or your tv. restting the display setting should get your picture back up. make sure the system is in standby and then hold down teh power button. it will turn green and beep, then flash green and beep again. it should brng up a picture. if not, check your component cables, especailly if it works with the original cables.

PS3 will play on AV but will not in HDMI

  1. Connect via AV and turn on the system.
  2. Go to Setting and then Display setting
  3. Select the connector type on your TV.
  4. After you selected connector your TV screen may go staid black. Try to hook your HD cable while the system is still on. (This step should be done in 30 sec. If not, will go back to previous screen)
  5. Your TV Screen should be on via HD cable

Japanese Ps3 not playing American games

It's because your trying to play american games on a japanese system. See the japanese system is different because of not only how much Power it needs to function (I'd be wary about that btw) as well that a Japanese PS3 can only play Japanese PS3 games. American games wont work for it.
