I cant rename my toshiba canvio 3 1tb - Toshiba Canvio 500 GB USB 3.0 Portable E05A050CAU3XS (Black/Silver) Hard Drive

Did you purchase a hard drive already formatted for Apple, that will cause that to happen?

Unless you used the "Move" command, the data should have only been copied off the Canvio, so you should be able to copy (or move) it to another computer as well if you so wish.

Check to see if there is a file in the root directory called "autorun.inf". If there is, either delete it, or move it to a backup folder. Now you should be able to rename your portable hard drive.

If you don't see the new name take effect right away, Safely remove the drive, unplug it and plug it back in. The changes should show up immediately.

Right click on "My Computer" (WinXP) or "Computer" (Windows 7/8) . Click on Manage. In the left window, click Disk Management. In the middle window, right click on the drive that you want to re-name, Click Properties. Above the Type: section there is a box that you can type in. Type in the name of the drive that you want to rename.

autorun.inf is a hidden system file. Make sure you can VIEW hidden files. Then look again at your portable drive's root folder.

(View TAB in your file explorer - Hidden Files checkbox)

Is it listed in Computer? if so, right click, scroll down to Eject. If that fails shut down computer, unplug external drive USB and pry the door open or disassemble the case.
