I have a mariner 4M outboard. The crank is seized but I can't remove the engine off the casing. I have undone all the obvious bolts and can get the engine to wiggle now, but it will not pull up. I would guess it is stuck on the driveshaft. Is there a procedure to remove this or do I just use brute force?
Thanks
Tom
The drive shaft goes down through the water pump impeller and I suspect that the problem will be in the pump
the impeller is rubber and if run dry will melt the rubber into the housing and bind up the shaft
Brute force is a last resort so get all the information you can from a service dealer mechanic

With your lower unit off have someone shift the engine into forward while watching the gear shift select shaft's rotation, let gearshift remain in forward, now place your lower unit in forward and reinstall. In the future just put engine in forward when installing a water pump as there won't be a need to move gearshift

without seeing it in front of me its difficult to advise,i had a mercury but it wasnt oil injection so i iam not sure exactly how this injection system works but i should imagine its nothing more than a O ring thats perished or a copper washer needs cleaning with some wet and dry.I bought a new 4stroke mercury in the end because i got fed up with fuel consumption from the 80hp two stroke ,this four stroke 50hp will do about 12 14 nautical miles to roughly 6/7 litres of petrol at about 1200 rpm because iam only a sunday driver and the bumping on the waves makes my back ache unbearable,Well this is the land of fiesta /siesta /manaña --spain .Have a closer look and see where its leaking its only a mechanical pump running off the engine ,so it will have a push rod with some sort of diaphragm that pumps a tinysquirt of oil into the crankcase so it can mix with the incoming fuel ,nothing complicated

If you know the year you should be able to go to http://www.crowleymarine.com/parts.cfm and pull up the wiring diagram out of the manual.

I forgot to mention, I have found the grommet for the gear linkage and undone the clamp for that. So I know it isn't that holding it down.
