I own this unit also and have found that it is very sensitive to speaker wire shorts. Please recheck all speaker connections to make sure you have no "stray wires" touching someplace to make a short.

sounds like you have the polairity reversed on the speakers
and yes it does make a difference
check polairity also make sure unit is well ventelated
you wouldnt use your compouter if it was inside a card board box
so make sure the reciever can breath also
recievers get too hot and they start blowing chips off the board

Sounds like you have a bad amp IC or transistors.
When these go bad they almost always put roughly 40 volts dc from the amp power supply to the speaker terminals. The protection circuit senses this dangerous (to your speakers) dc voltage and disconnects the speaker terminals from the amp via internal relays (the ones you hear click) and puts it into protect mode. If it didn't the dc voltage would quickly toast the voice coils of the connected speaker.

had
the same problem with a friend's 5560. it was a resistor on the rear
center channel board, which is mounted right behind the middle of the
heat sink. unhook the two ribbon type cables running to it from the
board.
everything will work, except the rear center channel
speaker. my friend never used the rear center channel anyway. in the
meantime, he bought a new receiver, so i have an extra one for my
workout room. woohoo. hope this helps.
