Canon EOS 20D shutter error

Everytime I turn on my 20D the shutter rapidly opens and closes as if it's taking pictures and the info screen on the top flashes err 99. It's not taking any pictures and I've tried putting in a cf card and anything else I can think of, but to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Weird - I just posted with the same problem. I have a suspicion that it has something to do with the battery.

Hello - I figured it out. I had the exact same problem. The shutter failed and it had to be fixed by Canon. Apparently that happens after the shutter fires so many times (like a click-count on a printer). I just got my camera back and it's doing awesome now.

Hi I am sachin gharat (CAMERA REPAIRER) FROM MUMBAI, I would like to suggest the symptoms says that your camera is having mechanical switching problem in shutter switches,which is constructed of two switches made from hard plates.get the shutter replaced from an expert serviceman.Thanks with regards

It's a frustrating catch all error and needs service.The camera may have any one of numerous issues or lens issues. If you have more than one lens, see if the error occurs with both lenses on. If not then it's a lens error. A camera repair facility can plug unit the camera and download a more accurate troubleshooting code. Royal Camera Service in Hanover Park, IL is good source for this problem. The replaced the shutter on my 20D when I got the error 99 code.

1.Remove the battery, lens and CF card. Allow the camera to sit without power for 20 minutes and then reinsert a fully charged battery.
2.Turn the camera on and push the shutter button as if you were taking a picture.
3. If you don't get the error message reattach the lens and insert the CF card.
4. Check the below canon eos 20d service manual link:

Canon 20D gone shutter crazy , clicking away on its own error code 99
The Canon 20 D is a fantastic camera but the weak point is the shutter it last about 70 to 80,000 actuation then causes a bunch of problems. In Canada it cost about $180.00 including the shipping to the repair depot to get it fixed.

LCD monitor works to display picture already taken and the menu display, but with not display live images. Must use the view finder. Menu does not have a "live view"
There is no function to do this on the EOS 400D. Don't forget the camera is an SLR and still has to open and close a shutter to take a picture. The image is then converted using a CCD instead of exposed on film. I find with my 20D I just take loads of pictures and review them and then delete the ones that I don't want. This is the beauty of the digital age.

Most likely the shutter blind sticking, so it will need a service. The cost might exceed the second hand value of the camera though.

The shutter continues to click in rapid concession Canon 20d
Check to make sure that you don't have it set on continuous. Check the lcd display and see if the shutter icon showing a mulitple as opposed to single frame image.
You should be able to choose between single, mulitiple and timed shutter releases...

I can help you fix the BUSY Error or Error 99 of your Canon EOS Rebel XS.

Installation of this Canon EOS Rebel XS firmware version 1.06 update will solve these problems:
  1. Some cameras may exhibit a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor does not display, the shutter does not release, and the BUSY indication remains lit in the viewfinder.

The shutter continues to click in rapid concession the moment I replace the battery. I don´t see anny Factory Reset button on my Canon 20D? What to do?
Make sure the camera is OFF when placing the battery in it, and have the mode dial (Top left side) set to the green rectangle for automatic mode. Then turn ON.
