Question about Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital Camera
Camera turns on, is able to take picture, but viewfinder screen does not come on. However, viewfinder screen does come on to allow viewing of pictures that have been taken and stored. How can I get it to come on to use to take pictures instead of having to look through the tiny viewfinder hole????
It may be fixable, but it may be expensive. You also have the option to upgrade your camera through Canon's Loyalty program. I'd give them a call and find out what your options are before going out and purchasing a new camera.

There is a temporary fix that works sometimes but eventually it will stop working alltogether. If canon can't help, might try this:

some cameras have the choice to take the picture by looking through the veiwfinder or on the LCD screen. check in the menu and set it to LCD if you want to use the LCD

I have a similar problem with my Canon S3 IS. Dark/black LCD in
Shooting mode. However, I can view my existing photos in Display mode.
I was about to spend money to get a Panasonic TZ5. Somehow I bumped
into a solution post for S2 IS. Here is the link:
I tried their solutions twice and it WORKS. My S3 is working fine now.
