I'm doing a talkback mod on a Cobra 29 LTD. I'm trying to wire it to the on/off channel 9, and I keep getting it turning onn all the time. When the switch is on or off, the talkback is still coming...

If you look at the tabs on the switch. You will have what looks like this.

* *
* *
* *

hook one wire to the center tab of one side. And then hook it to the top tab of the same side.

* *'''''''''''''''

Hope that helps.

My Cobra 29 LTD sometimes does not work even though the lights remain on. In other words I can't talk on it or hear anyone even though it appears to be operational

Your mic or mic jack is faulty. Try a different mic. In cobra 29's and some other variants, when you disconnect the mic, the audio is disabled. It will still receive, and transmit(possibly) but you will hear nothing from the radio.

It could be,
  • Broken wire on the back of the mic jack in the radio.
  • Broken wire in the mic cord.
  • Disconnected wires in the mic for the switch.
  • Dirty mic connection pins.
Most likely the problem is with the mic, and not the radio.

Cobra 29 ltd classic ant light

Your SWR is probably NOT fine. You need to use an external meter if you have had work done to the radio. Especially if you have had a swing mod done to the radio. When you do this, the dead key of the radio is lower then the calibration knob on the radio can adjust for. It will always come up lower then it actually is.

Your radio might have been fine before the work was done on it because it was putting out very little power. Now you are most likely putting out 50 watts or more. Big jump from 4 watts.

When your raise the power in a radio, you will notice more when the antenna is not properly tuned.

In most cases with a stock CB, even when the antenna is not even near tuned, you will get a reading less then 1.5 anyway.

the more power you put out, the more important it is to have a good match.

But an external SWR meter, and check it. be careful if the ANT light is on.

You might also want to check your coax, connections to it, and your antenna for anything wrong.

It sounds like the afc or IF pot is mistuned, May be the tech that did the super mod didn't adjust it completely correct.

Power options at home for Cobra 29.

FIRST THINGS FIRST, YOU NEED AN ANTENNA THE BETTER THE ANTENNA THE BETTER PERFORMANCE YOU GET, TRY A IMAX 2000,THAN PUT IT AT LEAST 10-20 FEET INTO THE AIR, THAN GET A GOOD COAX TO RUN FROM ANTENNA TO RADIO, NOW GO GET A NICE POWER SUPPLY AT LEAST A 8-12 AMP 13.8 VOLT POWER SUPPLY, THAN CONNECT RADIO TO POWER SUPPLY, CONNECT COAX TO CB REMEMBER TO GET A SWR / POWER METER SO YOU CAN MAKE SURE THE SWR IS AT LEAST 1.1 :1 THIS IS BEST, BUT ANYTHING UNDER A 2 IS OK, YOU WILL NEED A COAX JUMPER FOR THE METER, AFTER YOU CHECK EVRYTHING OUT GOTO CHANNEL 19 THAT IS MOST OF THE TRUCK DRIVERS IN YOUR AREA AND TRY AND TALK TO THEM, IF YOU ASK FOR A RADIO CHECK THEY MAY HERE YOU BUT ARE NOT UNDER ANY OBLIGATION TO ANSWERE YOU, SO LISTEN, ALWAYS ASSUME THEY DO HEAR YOU, IF YOU WANT MORE FUN OR BANG FOR THE BUCK GET A SIDEBAND RADIO
TALKS FURTHER, YOU LISTEN TO CHANNEL LSB 38 , MOST PEOPLE TALK HERE ARE IN THE U.S.A. EAST COAST TO WEST COAST NORTH TO SOUTH, HAVE FUN IT IS A HOBBY...HOPE YOU LIKE IT IF YOU CHOOSE IT....
