USB 3.0 external 3.5" HD only recognized through expansion port card

My Acomdata 3TB Puredrive USB 3.0 works normally when plugged into an old laptop, using the provided express card that gives it two USB 3.0 ports. The expansion port card needed some drivers installed and never had a problem. However, the drive is not recognized when I directly plug it into any other computer's USB port (tried both 3.0 and 2.0). It does not show up in disk manager, and Windows does not even show the systray icon for removable hardware. The same components which work great when plugged in the old laptop + the expansion port USB 3.0 card do not even get detected when plugged anywhere else. Any ideas? Acomdata.com is no longer in business, there is no way to get them to help. I have tried to find any required drivers online to no avail... but first I need help to get the computer to note the external drive's existence when I turn it on and plug it!

SOURCE: External hard drives not recognized by MacBook Pro using SIIG eSATA II 2 Port ExpressCard-M

Fixed- I purchased one of the following esata cards with the JMB360 chipset and it worked in my brand new Macbook pro 17" right out of the box.   My other eSata from SIIG, inc would not mount any drives or accept any drivers.    So the silicon based eSata's must have some type of hardware conflict with Macbooks.  (P.S.  I purchased the one from Best Connectivity for $20).   These cards all use the JMB360 Chipset:

  • ApioTek (1 port card) (EXTREME eSATAII Express Card)
  • Best Connectivity (1 esata)
  • GWC Technology (GWC BS1020) (2 ports)
  • nGear (Moved to the Sil3132 chipset list. See my more recent post about this)
  • PPA Int’l (2 ports)
  • VC (an original brand of Vintage Computer Inc.)
  • Syba (1 Port)
  • Sunix ECSA24J (Discontinued)

SOURCE: Fantom Drive TFDU16072A Error

2009 06 30 - I just had a similar problem. The Fantom external drive was working fine, but I had to shut down due to a thunderstorm. When I restarted the PC, the drive was not showing up. WHAT I FOUND: First, I didn't find this solution anywhere - everything seemed to point to a new install (or at least how to reformat and start over.) BUT, I right clicked on Computer, Manage, Disk Management - it still didn't show. On the right, under More Actions, I clicked 'rescan disks'. Now it shows up! And all of my data is right there. Whew!

SOURCE: Vista stops recognizing external hard drive

This doesn't sound like an OS issue. This appears to be more an issue of the connection to the hard drive. The USB cable likely isn't the culprit, nor the laptop USB inputs. If the drive was ever dropped or the cable gets removed and reattached often to the actual enclosure, you might be looking at a bad port on the enclosure. This isnt a lost cause. You can always buy a hard drive enclosure from newegg and move the drive from the IOMEGA to the new enclosure. You can get a new enclosure for $15. Just because the USB port is bad, it doesnt mean the data is gone and the hard drive cant be used.

Windows will not start with a Toshiba external hard drive plugged into USB

Computer starts normally in windows with a windows that is installed on a hard disk on that copmuter. In other words - windows is installed on an internal hard disk of a computer A. If you get it out and put in a computer B it wont work.

To have the things work:
1. First should set in BIOS boot up options first boot device CD/DVD, second OTHER/USB/EXTERNAL, third HDD
2. Should boot up from a CD and install windows on an external hard disk (in your case your 3TB Toshiba external HD)
3. Set in BIOS boot up options first boot device OTHER/USB/EXTERNAL, second internal hard disk e.g. HDD0, HDD1

First make sure usb cable connected to harddrive is working fine. try it in different usb ports. Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.Then restart computer then check. Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer too then your harddrive has internal issue. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. My external hard drive fell off my desk and since it has been beeping and not operating correctly

You broke it. Does the Acomdata warranty cover self-inflicted damage?
Did you buy it with a credit-card that adds "all-perils" insurance?

All you can do is to disassemble the enclosure, remove the disk-drive,
buy a similar, compatible, disk-drive, install it into the enclosure,
and thus "revive" your external storage device.

External hardrive not recognized

Try a different cable between the computer and the drive.

Disassemble the casing, and remove the "internal" disk-drive.
If the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has "died", it's possible that the
disk-drive itself is intact, and your data will be intact.

Connect the "internal" disk-drive as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, and see if it can be detected.

If it's dead, and it's still under warranty, then exercise the warranty.

The red light is staying on on my Acomdata 1TB Puredrive USB Esata 1 TB Hard Drive and the computer will not recognize it.

I would say take the drive out and if you have SATA connectors on your motherboard, connect it directly to you computer and see if the computer will recognize it.  If it does, your enclosure is bad.

Problems with Hard Drive

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

T your concern:
  • initially, pls verify that it is indeed an external storage problem rather than a laptop USB issue by trying other USB devices and determine if they are recognized and working;
  • disassemble the enclosure of the Acomdata external hard drive and remove the actual hard drive;
  • you would need the use of a 2nd PC, a desktop that could accommodate the HD from the Acomdata (IDE or SATA);
  • install the HD from the Acomdata as a Secondary Master or Slave internally to the 2nd PC;
  • boot the 2nd PC and determine if the HD from the Acomdata will be recognized as a local drive;
  • chances are that the partition of the HD from the Acomdata was messed up. This would explain the blinking blue light;
  • download and install a file recovery program. An example is GetDataBack (unfortunately not a freeware but DEMO is available) and do a recovery. It would take some time based on the size of the HD from the Acomdata;
  • temporarily save the recovered data in the 2nd PC. You can burn this likewise into a DVD backup should the 2nd PC be capable of that;
  • after recovery, re-partition and format the HD from the Acomdata while still attached to the 2nd PC;
  • should the re-partition and format be successful, you can transfer back the temporarily saved recovered files;
  • a nice, simple, fast and safe partitioning/formatting software is Partition Magic (unfortunately not a freeware but FREE TRIAL is available).
  • should the re-partition and format be not successful, you can replace only the HD and/or claim warranty.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Drive not recognized by desktop.

Try checking your power cord adapter.
I found the same problem was with the cord.
Luckily, I had another Acomdata HD cord to check the problem.
