Nope...
your desktop can also go onlie using the wireless belkin router,so this router will now act as a distributor, you need to setup the router between the modem and the computer that is wired,i hope that when you say modem it is the one provided to you by your internet service provider, what you need to do is to conect the modem to the router and the router to you desktop computer, you desktop computer will go online using the wired connection to the belkin rotuer and you laptops will use the wireless connection..

My modem works fine when i directly connect 2 the CPU,and when i use the router and connect it don't work........the power, wirless,LAN,are all green and the intenet(Modem) is orange.....help plz =/

If your with cable ISP you need to mac clone the mac address of the pc to the router.
1.make sure that everything is connected properly (modem to internet port of the router and pc to regular port)
2.access the router, http://192.168.1.1 (username: admin / password: password)
3.under basic settings page, scroll down to the bottom and look for router mac address and select Use Computer MAC Address and then hit apply
4.click the router status on the left pane and check if there's an IP under internet port, if yes it should be working and if not you need to power cycle the network
5. to power cycle, turn off the router and modem for 3 minutes and then turn on the modem first and then the router
5.it should work now

Belkin Router not allowing an Internet connection

It's not unheard of for a router to fail. When you connected the computer to the Modem, did you use the same cable that was connected to the router? Does your internet connection require a username and password? If so, is that configured in your modem, or the router? If not in the modem it must be the router.

Wanting wireless hookup

1)Prepare your modem. Unplug the modem's power cord and place the wireless router unit next to the modem. If the router has antennas, make sure they are raised to their full upright position.
2)Reassign your networking cable. Unplug the cable currently connected from your computer to your modem and plug it into the port located in the wireless router. This port is usually colored blue.
3)Connect the router and the modem. Use the networking cable that came with your wireless router to connect the modem and router unit. The router port is typically colored in green.
4)Start up your modem. Plug in the modem's power cord and wait 1-2 minutes while it configures its settings and prepares to connect to the Internet.5
5)Start up the wireless router. Plug the wireless router's power cord into an outlet and wait 1-2 minutes to get it started. The router is ready when the 'wired computers' and 'modem' icons light up. These logos or icons vary by make and model of your router so consult the owner's manual if needed.6
6)Insert your installation CD. Use the wizard or assistant to check the configurations of your computer settings and launch your wirelessnetwork clip_image001.gif
Things You’ll Need:
  • Wireless Router unit
  • Networking cable (comes with router unit)
  • Installation CD
  • Modem
  • Modem power cord

Setting up my wirless that a bought for christmas

When you connect your computer directly to your DSL modem with an ethernet cable are you still able to access the internet?

If so we need to see if your DSL modem is assigning IP addresses from the same subnet as your new router.

With your computer connected to your cable modem click Start and then Run (Windows XP) and type "cmd" (no quotes) in the box and hit the enter key. A black window should open. In the window type the following and hit enter "ipconfig /all" Please write down the following items:
1. Description
2. IP Address
3. Default Gateway

Once completed connect your computer to one of the 4 LAN ports on your router, restart your computer and run the same test again then write down the same 3 items.

Please post the information here when complete.
