Non priming, hard to prime, or pump that loses prime = a suction leak somewhere between pool suction ports (skimmer / main drain) and the pump. Could be a shaft seal as well!
Check all threaded fittings, unions, and valves. Orings, etc.
Sounds like a priming problem. look at the check valve in front of the pump in the suction line. sounds as if it is loosing its prime so you don't have enough water close enough to the pump to get it primed.

I removed filter and lubricated ring, cleaned area around ring, replaced filter and pump primed. It worked for the remainder of cycle. This morning when it was time for pump to go on, it didn't prime. Do you think the problem is within the filter or perhaps air getting in at one of the valves?
I'd appreciate any ideas someone might have.
Thanking you in advance.

Thank yoiu for giving me some new places to try; however where is the suction valve?
Thanking you once again for your assistance.

is this pump using a flooded suction or are you drawing water "up" to the pump housing?
If you are drawing the water "up" to the pump then you may have a bad check valve in the suction line going to the front of the pump. the check valve will hold the water in the line.
