Question about GE JVM1650 1000 Watts Microwave Oven
The exhaust fan will start running when the door to microwave oven is open and turn off when closed. It always runs normally when the microwave is in operation. The problem will correct itself usually within a few hours and then arise again a few days later. The problem is intermittent in nature
Bad door switch in my case. Rings OK w/ an ohm meter, but no positive click, and return spring action seems weak.

The top door switch is almost certainly defective or loose. Most likely the latter, and possibly due to a loose or broken mount. Chances are that only the fan and light are on, but it's not wise to take chances with microwave energy, whuch can cause burns and fire. One way to possibly test this theory is to pull up gently on the door and see if it stops doing it. But that's not a foolproof test. A broken or loose mount can be caused by inadequate plastic or improper assembly techniques during manufacturing, by slamming the door, or other physical damage. Bad door switches are usually caused by opening the door while it's cooking instead of hitting the STOP KEY first. I have a helpful text file on door switches with safety tips that will help you. You can find it by searching on Yahoo.com (not Google) for microwave safety.txt Good luck and be safe!

One of the door switches may be sticking due to grease or carbon buildup. Or you may have a loose door switch mount. If you or a friend decide to work on it, we have *critical* safety, disassembly, and troubleshooting info (as well as a text file which helps in diagnosing and repairing door switch problems) at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

In most cases, it's not actually cooking, but instead the fan, turtable and light may be on. Yet it does need attention.
What this usually means is that you have a shorted door switch or a bad door switch mount.
It's easy to tell if it's actually cooking, just place a cup of water inside and see if it heats.
If so, that could mean a stuck relay on the control board. If so, we repair these for customers nationwide with our guaranteed $39.95 service. Far less than a new board.
If you or a friend decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and
disassembly information at our site, linked here on Fixya: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

Looking at the schematic in the service manual here, I would say relay RY6 on the small sub PCB (relay board) has shorted contacts.
That's the relay that runs both the fan and turntable.
It's possible that it may be a bad connection or driving component on that board, but in my experience, it's virtually always a stuck relay.
The part number on the relay as shown in the photo is hard to read, but it looks like "OJ-SH-112LM".
I should have one of these or I can point you to one if you want to contact me with the exact number.
Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

Sounds like there is a stray piece of wire or other metal floating around inside the case. Remove the cover and any breakables in the microwave (the power cord is unplugged for this), turn it upside down over a table and shake it, pound the bottom, and shake it some more--likely the offending piece will drop out onto the table. If so, put it back together and whack it to see if that fixed the problem (cord plugged back in). This process can be repeated.
