I have error U071. I have been refilling the PGBK5 tank with black dye not pigment black for ages. I suspect that it may be because I have not been refilling it with pigment black. The LCD says that I have "more than one ink tank of the following color installed" The diagram indicates the large tank and calls it BK ( not PGBK).It appears that the only solution is to buy a new Canon tank. However, I am concerned that it still won't work. Does anyone have a genuine fix?

The way the chips work is a light is emitted from the LED on the rear of the chip and it shines through the cartridge prism. When you start your printer the cartridges swing over the left and an optical sensor picks up the light from the cartridges. There are a number of things that can effect the sensor, such as having the lid open or a dirty sensor. Or in my case ink splattered on the prism.

You will need to get a new(er) print cartridge and replace the old one to eliminate the problem.

I have experienced the same problem after refilling the ink cartridge for several applications. I suspect that if the printer can not properly ID the tank levels or read the "chip" connected to the cartridge...then it is time to change it out to a different or new cartridge. That is the remedy that has worked for me.

Why does canon 860 pixma printer have 2 black ink tanks? only one seems to be used,

The big black tank is pigment based ink used mainly for printing text documents and copies and the smaller black is dye based ink used along with the color inks during photo printing.

Canon MP600 printer. Black Ink cartridge PGBK5 is

You need both. One is pigment and the other is dye. One is used for photographs and the other for non-photographs - but it's the printer that decides which one to use.
All Canon printers (to my knowledge) will stop working if any one ink cartridge is empty. This is to prevent damage to the print nozzles. The ink itself is the cooling medium for the hot nozzles.

Need to replace ink cartridge

http://reviews.cnet.com/multifunction-devices/pixma-mp830-office-all/4505-3181_7-31785803.html

Replacing the five ink tanks (cyan, yellow, magenta, black dye, and black pigment) is a simple task. The top of the printer flips up to reveal the ink tanks and the printheads, and by flipping a lever, you can pull out each tank individually. Being able to replace individual tanks is a boon, as you won't waste colors you use less frequently. Also, you won't need separate photo ink to print photos, which we appreciate. Canon ships the Pixma MP830 with full ink tanks. Replacement color and dye-based black ink tanks cost $14.25 apiece, while the pigment-based black ink tank costs $16.25. Canon estimates the cost per page for both black text and color text to be an inexpensive 2 cents.

Black ink

The PGBK cartridge is a pigment black ink, while the others use a dye for coloration. The pigment black is used when printing text and other documents. The dye ink is used when printing photos and other colored documents. The dye black is used in conjunction with the color (dye) inks to provide tinting and color gradation, and therefore is not used nearly as much as the pigment black unless you use your printer only for printing photos.

If you're printing text and documents, you will need to buy another pigment black (PGBK) cartridge.
