low water flow is making the heater knock, (PULSATE) clean filter or backwash, check pump and skimmer baskets and empty. if still low flow and knocking, check impeller on pool pump to make sure it isnt clogged.
The sightglass is designed for backwash only, it allows you to see the degree of clarity in the effluent water. There should not be flow through the sightglass when the filter is in normal operation. Sometimes the pump will be alot louder when you backwash because there is alot less back pressure and it sometimes causes pump cavitation. The pump should quiet down when in normal filter mode. If not, there may be problems with the bearings and/or cavitation.
Poor flow, try cleaning the filter. If it is a cartridge, try a brand new element.
Next would be to inspect the bypass in the header to ensure it is sound.
