When I turn on my Toshiba Laptop, no matter mode I start it up in (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt Last Known Good Configuration and Normally) it won't load past the Microsoft Windows XP point, a Blue screen appears and disappears once in a split second. Top left message on blue screen says:
STOP:c0000218{Registry File Failure}
the registry cannot load the hive (file):
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or its log or alternate.
And a few other lines.
Comp worked fine until this happened. How do I fix this?
Thanks, Matt
To clarify the problem - this is on a Toshiba Satellite A35-S159 laptop. Once the blue screen appears it quickly goes away and a screen pops up stating an error occured and Windows could not startup properly, then i have the options to Start Windows, Start Windows using setup from last successful startup, Safe mode..etc and other listed in intial posting. Selecting any option brings me to blue screen again and right back to this selection screen.
My Windows disk is in another location and i will not be able to retreive for a week. In the mean time, any other suggestions? To clarify the problem - this is on a Toshiba Satellite A35-S159 laptop. insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.
1.

4.
In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
5.
Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

If your S.O. is Windows you can try any Windows Password Recovery Tool
Alternatively you can ty( if Windows):
Step 1: Boot or Reboot your Windows laptop (it is a Windows 7 example ). Step 2: Hold on F8 to enter Advanced Boot Options before the Windows 7 loading screen appears.
Or Press CTRL to enter Advanced Boot Options when computer power on. Step 3: Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt in the coming screen, and press Enter.
There are three options for choice, Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking and Safe Mode with Command Prompt. In order to reset Windows user password with command prompt, select Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Step 4: Wait for Windows 7 to load files until Windows login screen comes out. Step 5: Log in with an administrator account or built-in administrator when you see login screen. Step 6: Command Prompt runs automatically. Type net user in the Command Prompt and press Enter to see how many user accounts in locked laptop. Then all of laptop users will be listed in the Command Prompt. Step 7: Choose one administrator to reset forgotten password for laptop.
Type net user fuzi 123 and hit Enter. Suppose 'fuzi' is your locked Windows user name. Then '123' would be new password you reset for it. Step 8: Login your laptop with the new password after successfully laptop password reset.
When you start your computer. Hit the F8 key, and then a prompt will come up to boot in Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, and Safe Mode in Command Prompt. Make your choice.
When the System comes back on in Safe Mode, all unnecessary utilities are shut down or do not work, such as your speakers or the sound. If you open Safe Mode with Networking, than you are connected to a Network, but you still can only do a few tasks that Safe Mode allows. After you restart your computer and run it normally, than all functions will return to their normal operations, including your speakers and sound.
Go to the safe mode option then once there go to start-run-then type in MSCONFIG then go to system recovery then go to recovery for an earlier time. This will reset your Windows to an earlier time you may be able to salvage it without having to re-install the operating system. F8 also will bring you to "Safe Mode" if not do it through the Dos command screen. If this does not work then you might consider re-installing Windows again. John
If it brings you to this screen it should also have an option to start up with the last known configuration that worked. Have you tried this? The only other thing I can think of is to boot up into Safe Mode with Networking, which will allow you to still go online, and run Windows Update. Install everything it tells you to, except language packs, and see if that helps. What Operating System do you have?
Press and hold F8 while booting up to access Safe Mode functions which include Safe Mode with Command Prompt and Safe Mode with Networking. Hope this answers your question. Best of luck! Greg
