Runs 10 - 20 seconds then quits-restarts on next trigger pull

I leave my handheld in the charger all the time. When I go to use it, it will run for a few seconds, then quite, I re-squeeze the trigger, and it starts again...sounds like full volume..but quits again...Have to do this about 10 times to clean my car mat.

Mine does the same thing. After I tried cleaning the filter this seemed to start happening. Did you ever fix the problem?

  • dcarr744 May 01, 2009

My DC16 only runs for 2-3 seconds, so you cannot clean ANYTHING.  I also leave it on the charger all the time, which cannot be wrong as it is designed that the charger is also the "home" for the vac.

When I press the trigger the green light comes on but motor does not

Hi Perry, it's Jack at Dyson.

If the green light comes on when your DC35's trigger is pulled, but the machine does not run, this would usually signal that the battery has no charge.

The battery should recharge fully from depleted in 3.5 hours. However if your machine has been connected to the charger for at least this long and still won't run, it could mean there's an issue with either the charger or the battery.

We're happy to talk you through some simple diagnostic checks when you have your machine to hand, to help determine which part is at fault. At your earliest opportunity, please call us on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

The dyson handheld cuts out almost immediately after pulling trigger, Some times runs a little longer before it stops. Keeps doing this constantly. What is problem? Thanks G

Depending on the model you have:
Thermal cut out Most Dyson vacuums have a built in safety system that stops the machine if it begins to overheat. This usually happens because the filter needs washing or your machine is blocked. If your machine turns off on its own, unplug it and leave it for at least an hour to cool down. Remember to check the filter and look for blockages before re-starting

If that doesn't work shake your cord and see if there is a short in it.

My DC 16 will only run for a second each trigger pull. The battery is fully charged, it has plenty of suction, just wont run for more than a second. I cleaned the filters.

I had the same problem with my Dyson DC16, where it only runs for a few seconds at a time with each trigger pull. My husband called Dyson (Canada) and without hassle they shipped us a replacement part which I just received this morning. The replacement part sent to us is: DC16 Main Body with Rating Plate. It is also under warranty for 1 year. The great customer service makes up for the flaw in the machine. Also, Dyson is aware of the problem. Hope this helps.
