On the power sub-woofer, when turn the bass control toward 'maximum', the bass decreases and vice-verse

It sounds like you have it all figured out. Is it a problem? After all, it's just labeling.

When I connect my Wharfedale Moviestar 50 subwoofer to my receiver, it doesn't give out any bass. I tried turning up the volume, but all I heard was a deep rumble when I turned the knob. This is very...

I suspect your receiver is no longer sending out signals to it. Try adjusting the speaker settings and see if it has been turned off or is too low.

By the way some receivers have settings for late night listening, so you don't have to switch things off. Check your manual to see if your Receiver has these settings.

I have a 42" LG plasma TV with a number of different inputs including a spare HDMI and component sockets, but have no idea whether there is a cable or convertor to allow me to connect to the amplified base...

do you have a cable box? with your wharfdale set-up, you could run the video from the cable box into the tv, and run the seperate audio oupputs from the cable box into the wharfdale.

thats really the most common way to run audio, either that or through hdmi- either way, you will need to hqave a cable box to complete the set-up, cause not that many tv's have audio or hdmi outputs.

Wharfdale moviestar 70 speekers and sub

i have the same moviestars 70+ plus a yamaha rx-v750 put the crossover on the sub to maximum (left knob) volume (right knob) about 2/3 clockwise. change the crossover on the yamaha to anywhere from 80-120 ( the 120 will put more bass to the sub) if your yamaha has sub level/volume control set it higher, also if it has LFE/sub out set it to sub only.
Good luck!
