The print head may be blocked.
Run the cleaning cycle a few times on the machine.
This can be done through the software drivers loaded on your computer.
If this does not help, you will need to replace the black print head.
Er, NO.
The answer to the above question is clearly misleading.
If you consult the documentation for your HP K5400, which can also be found online, you will find that the printer cartridge lights also blink when the print heads require replacing.
If you have replaced the cartridge and the light still flashes, this is the most common solution. Replace the print heads.
Unfortunately because the printer is badly designed, there is no way of indicating this, and you will have troubles if you attempt to get the HP Toolbox or any other diagnostic tools working.
Good luck!
It's possible you have one of the following problems:
Printhead is faulty
The printhead has expired (HP printheads have an expiry date which is written into the chip) In both of these cases contact HP support to request a warranty replacement (but try the ideas below first obviously :))
The printhead hasn't been inserted properly
The chip contacts are dirty or soiled in some way For these last two, try removing the printhead, cleaning the chip carefully with a cotton bud and then replacing carefully.
It's also entirely possible that you've been sold a lemon in which case you need to call the store you bought the printer from and get them to troubleshoot the issue with you and/or replace it/refund your money.

The k5400 is not recognizing that the ink cartridge is installed. Clean the contacts on the back of the ink cartridge and also the contacts in the K5400 printer. I always use 91% isopropyl alcohol, Hp says to use distilled water. Do let the contacts completely dry before reinstalling.
