It has 760 mb of ram - can I add more? Will this help it run faster or should I just a disc defrag?
You may consider follow:
1) you need to make sure your system slower than before the reason that should be excepted some windows system file damage or never clean disk fragile files and clean temp files
2) your PC max ram size is 1G (two sockets), now you have 256M+512M two ram sticks, so you can replace the 256M with 512M ram stick, you should make sure new ram should be same model as your original one.( your ram model is PC2100)
is this helpful or fixed your slower running?
Yes, you can add more - But if you have a fragmented HDD, it won't help much. Before you spend money on physical memory, I would do a disk defrag, check to make sure your HDD is not getting too full, and check your virtual memory. On xp you can get to this by right clicking MY COMPUTER, click properties, Performance, Paging file. XP has a problem during install of not setting this right. Change it to "system managed size", apply & ok, reboot your computer. If this doesn't help, and your HDD is not too full, stop some of the things that are loading up on startup.

Next Right click on the "C:" drive (Or the drive you wish to Defrag) and select properties from the list that appears... From the next menu select "Tools" and then "Defragment Now" The Disk Defragmenter screen will now appear, Click on Analyze. This will check your drives and will only take a few seconds. If your result shows a lot of red like mine (see picture below) then click on "Defragment" to continue) Be warned this may take several hours, so don
