HP pavilion 515n runs real slow

It has 760 mb of ram - can I add more? Will this help it run faster or should I just a disc defrag?

You may consider follow:
1) you need to make sure your system slower than before the reason that should be excepted some windows system file damage or never clean disk fragile files and clean temp files
2) your PC max ram size is 1G (two sockets), now you have 256M+512M two ram sticks, so you can replace the 256M with 512M ram stick, you should make sure new ram should be same model as your original one.( your ram model is PC2100)
is this helpful or fixed your slower running?

Yes, you can add more - But if you have a fragmented HDD, it won't help much. Before you spend money on physical memory, I would do a disk defrag, check to make sure your HDD is not getting too full, and check your virtual memory. On xp you can get to this by right clicking MY COMPUTER, click properties, Performance, Paging file. XP has a problem during install of not setting this right. Change it to "system managed size", apply & ok, reboot your computer. If this doesn't help, and your HDD is not too full, stop some of the things that are loading up on startup.

My inspiron 1501 has been running exstremely slow (internet and the actual computer itself)

Hi hrd0013...
Do some cleanup on your computer to see if it runs faster.
Do a disk clean and a disk defragment
Add more memory or a programs that "recycles" your ram like the following FREE program: http://download.cnet.com/Free-Ram-Optimizer-XP/3000-2086_4-10238479.html?tag=mncol;1

1...Disk cleanup...Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disc Clean-up
2...Disk Defragment (Hard Drive )...Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk deframenter
3...Get rid of any unused programs, files, pictures etc..
Your machine should speed up if you do the above.

What do i do when the games on my computer are very slow.

Ok, there are many reasons why the games on your computer may be running slow.

First, if the game is a downloadable game or a game uploaded via a Disc purchased from a store than your computer may not meet the system requirements to run at the normal speed.

To correct this, you can try a few things that wont cost you anything.

Option One:
1. Click the Start Menu.
2. Click on ALL PROGRAMS
3. Select Accessories
4. Click System Tools
5. Click DISC CLEANUP

This will compress and remove any unnessary files such as temporary internet files and trash.
This can open up a significantly amount of space on your computers hardrive which often allows games to run at a faster rate.

Option Two:
1. Click the Start Menu.
2. Click on ALL PROGRAMS
3. Select Accessories
4. Click System Tools
5. Click Disk Defragmenter

This will defragment and compress and files on your computer that are currently using more space than they need to. This can occassionally be a significant aid in speeding up a computer.

I advise you to complete both of these initial Options prior to using my next Option:

Option Three (COSTS MONEY):

1. You can purchase a new video card (Best Bet is to buy from the manufacture of the computer)
2. You can add RAM to your computer if it is a desktop. (Often, desktops can have more RAM added to them, or a second Processor/ Video Card in order to run faster)

Hope this helps.

MY computer it run slow hp CPU Pentium 4 1.6GB Ram 256MB VGA 128MB Hard dish 20GB

Run 'disc cleanup' and the 'defragment' utilities on your computer, these will erase unneeded data and arrange your Hard Drives to run faster, they can be found under the control panel.

Slow start up....windows home edition of xp

I take it you mean that it started up faster before now?

Some things that can slow it down:
1) run scandisk
2) run defrag
3) run the command msconfig from the Start>run command
Remove unnecessary programs from the startup tab. This doesn't uninstall the programs, just tells them not to start. You may have spyware and adware running.
4) run a good malware detection program and scan for viruses.
5) Install more memory. In the beginning, many companies put 512 MB RAM in the XP machines. You need at least 1 GB of RAM to run smoothly and 2GB for best performance.

Want to increase the speed of my pc

Hello alanwemple,

Increasing the RAM is surely a good first step to speeding your computer up some. It was my impression that the a340n supports a total of 4GB, so you might want to recheck your manual. And 4GB would certainly be better than 2. As for the CPU, it's upgradeable on this machine, it uses a "Socket 478" chip. Simply remove the old one and insert a new one. But, the CPU is probably not contributing that much to your slowness problem.

Two things that I'd look at first, before I tackled the CPU is video performance and the hard drive. A faster video card with more video RAM can substantially speed things up. And, the hard drive may need some maintenance, starting with defrag. You may also want to do a disk cleanup and while you are at it, run a full virus check and malware detection program such as MacAfee or Norton to make absolutely sure that no bad stuff is slowing you down. And these are cheaper than replacing the CPU.

Hope this helps.

Comp running real slow and diskdefragment wont work

Hi Iharms,

I can help you with this but i need a bit more information first.

How long have you had this pc?

How many little icons can you see at the very bottom right of your screen? (on the blue bar near the clock, just a number would be OK)

How long has it been since you reformatted?

do you get any weird messages when you use the computer?

What virus protection do you use?

thanks in advance and i just want to mention that at the very least we will get your pc running alot faster.

How to upgrade a new compaq presario SR2150NX?

Add more RAM, 512MB ram will slow your computer down because when you run out of ram the computer uses the hard drive as vitrual ram. I have 4GB in my Vista machine and it is faster than XP.

Another suggestion is to turn off the hard drives indexing. Right click on your "C" drive and unhook the "index this drive for faster searching" box.
