My preferred solution is GParted. You can download this LiveCD and boot from it. The interface is fairly simple to understand. NOTE: It is important that after you resize a Windows partition you boot it up right away and allow it to scan the disk.

It must be a Volume device drive problem, please try to update your volume device drive software, find your original dell Inspiron 1420 volume device driver software or download it from www.dell.com
Install the latest touchpad driver from support.dell.com
There is a setting in the touchpad tab of the mouse driver. Either Enable PalmCheck or Disable touchpad when typing (Depends on Synaptics or Alps drive I believe)
With palmcheck enabled, the touchpad is disabled when typing
your multimedia adapter and vga is responsible for that problem. use your motherboard cd to re istall all the neccesary vga and multimedia controllers and adapters. if that does not work, please notify me and i will try to find some assistance from the team.
Try starting explorer by going to file\new task (run..) and typing explorer.
If it doesnt work, just type msconfig on the same box and go to startup tab, leaving everything unmarked, just reboot your pc and problem should be solved
You need to access the disk management console by right clicking the My Computer icon and go to manage. Then find Disk Management tab.
What you want to do is delete the drive completely make sure the drive letter is gone then right click on the empty space you want to partition and tell it to partition it, then format it. If you need to make it dynamic you can do that next too.
checklist:
1. sound driver
2. microphone settings in volume control applet
3. tap test (tap the area around the microphone and see if eg Sound Recorder picks it up)
4. external microphone
If you get to step 4 before you get anything then your problem is one of missing or damaged microphone.
You need a Vista premium disk to upgrade to Vista premium.
Just instert the Vista premium disk and start the installation.
If installation does not start, you will need to boot from setup CD, sometimes you have to change the bios boot sequence in bios settings, to start the installation from CD.
