I had this problem for months - I finally figured it out on my own...
Go to your RealTek HD Audio Manager (this is either a red speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner or if you go to 'control panel, sounds speak and audio devices, realtek hd sound effect manager)
once you have the window open, under 'sound effect, go to environment and to the right of the drop down menu, click 'RESET'.
After months of trying to fix this issue, this fixed it for me!!! I hope it does for you too!
Go to control panel > sounds and audio devices properties, in there make sure its not muted, also check speaker volume and click the advanced button for the mixer.
Do you have a speaker to connected to the computer? You need to isolate the problem, follow the instructions below:
1. Connect the speaker into different computer to make sure that the speaker is working. 2. Check the volume settings by double-clicking the speaker icon on the System Tray (down by the clock) and make sure that the Mute box is not checked. 3. Check the sound properties of the problem computer: * Go to the Control Panel > click on "Sounds" or "Sounds and Audio Devices" * Go to Audio tab and check the sound recording and play-back * Make sure that those two field are configured properly.
If the speaker worked on other computer and the sound properties is configured properly, then there could be a problem with the sound card that you have in your computer. Maybe updating or re-installing the sound card driver will do.
Have you checked to see if any of your audio mixers are muted? You can do this by double clicking on the speaker icon in the lower right corner of your monitor. Check to make sure none of the 'mute' buttons are selected. Good Luck
