Launching my scanning software launches my browser, then crash

Ok, so I am trying to install my Canon N656U scanner on my laptop. I have installed the drivers, and the Canon ScanGear Toolbox from the Canon site (several times actually), I have installed them, the computer sees them, I can run the 'test' function from within the properties, but when I launch software (either manually, or by pushing the button on the scanner) My browser tries to launch, then, the software crashes.  Now, I have tried the Canon ScanGear software, as well as the built in Scanner and Camera Wizard, as well as a couple of others that I downloaded...it does not matter, it all does the same thing, launches, Browser launches, then the scan software (whatever one it is) crashes.
I have deleted everything (hardware, drivers...anything I can find) and reinstalled several times (in the neighborhood of 20 times) in all different orders.
HELP...please...I have a TON of scanning to do, and I do not want to sit out at the desk....

The setup may be accessing your browser for registration of the product. This could be causing your firewall to stop it as it doesn't recognise the request. You need to allow the programme associated with the product to access the internet.

How do I scan to my Toshiba laptop. It tells me I am not hooked up to my computer. I can send docs to printer but do not know how to use the scanner.

First how is the computer connected to the printer (USB or wireless)? Next did you install the full software for the printer or just the basic driver? The software is available from http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_all_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mx472#DriversAndSoftware . What OS are you using? What firewall software do you have installed?

First, if you are using a USB cable, try a new cable of less than 6' in length.Try a different USB port and a direct connection if you use a USB hub. Scanning requires bi-directional communication between the computer and the MX472. Printing doesn't need the same level of two-way communication.

For a wireless connection, you'll need to ensure that your firewall allows for the bi-directional communication on all of the relevant ports.

Next launch the IJ Scan Utility software. This is how the Canon all-in-one talks to the computer. Put your document/picture on the scanner glass face down. Select the Scan from Computer tab; it's the first tab. Try scanning manually after setting the desired scan software, scan DPI and destination. See http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/printers_multifunction/office_all_in_one_inkjet_printers/pixma_mx472?pageKeyCode=ekbresults&CONFIGURATION=1011&PARTITION_ID=1&secureFlag=false&mType=PIXMA%20MX&mName=PIXMA%20MX472&TIMEZONE_OFFSET=&USERTYPE=1&CMD=VIEW_ARTICLE&ARTICLE_ID=53332 for some details on these settings. This manual scan will work with any connection type between the computer and the printer, if the ports are not blocked by a firewall.

If you wish to use the Scan from the Operation Panel option, you need to have a USB connection between the computer and the MX472. You also can't set this from the Image Garden software if you launch that first. After doing your first manual scan and getting the initial settings, select the Scan from Operation Panel tab. Set the Auto-Scan options as per your initial scan settings. Click OK to save the settings. Now, try launching the scan from the LCD panel or Scan button on the all-in-one.

I hope this helps. If you are using a network connection, please add a comment with the firewall software for details on how to allow the scanner to communicate to the computer.

How do i scan onto my computer from my canon mp490

First install the Canon full feature software (MP Navigator EX for Windows) for your OS. If Canon doesn't have a version for your OS, you can only scan by launching software on your computer. See http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp490#DriversAndSoftware for the latest software and drivers. Make sure that the monitor feature runs at boot up (and isn't closed).

Next launch the software on your computer and use it to scan something. Under Preferences in the General tab, select the software that should acquire the scan and the folder in which you want the files stored. (In Windows, the ScanGear MP program should launch as well.) Adjust the resolution as needed. Make a note of the settings that work well for that type of scan.

Now, if you are using a USB connection to your computer, you need to set the Navigator to respond to the buttons on the all-in-one. This is under Preferences and the Scanner Button Settings tab. You need Auto > Save to PC.

If you have the all-in-one connected to your network, you must scan from the computer. (There is no way for the software to monitor button presses across the network.)

I hope this helps.

When i try to scan picture on the Canon Pixma MG6150, i get a message saying "set the PC to start scanning". i dont know what that means

You need to install and set up the Canon MP Navigator EX (if available for your OS) in order for the computer to "hear" and launch the scan program. This only works for USB connected printers; a bad USB cable could break the feature. Try a different cable (no longer than 6' long) and a direct connection if you are using a USB hub. The software doesn't correctly respond to the buttons when the MG6150 is a networked printer. http://www.canon-europe.com/Support/Consumer_Products/products/Fax__Multifunctionals/InkJet/PIXMA_MG_series/PIXMA_MG6150.aspx?type=download&page=1 lists all of the software available. Use the drop-down menus to limit the list. I found it at the bottom of the second page of files for Vista drivers and software in English.

Next launch the Navigator program and manually start a scan. Then use that scan to give you the defaults for future scans. To launch scans from the scan to computer button on the scanner. Go to Preferences and the Scanner Button Settings Tab. Set an Event as Save to PC and then Scan Type to Auto Scan. Set additional settings based on the manual scan.
If you are using the all-in-one as a networked printer, you can scan manually by launching the software from the computer or scan to a memory card or USB drive from the control panel on the printer. See the Canon support page (Scan to memory card or USB drive) for details. Start here: http://www.canon-europe.com/Support/Consumer_Products/products/Fax__Multifunctionals/InkJet/PIXMA_MG_series/PIXMA_MG6150.aspx?faqtcmuri=tcm:13-776471&page=1&type=faq .
If the MP Navigator isn't available for your OS, try Windows Fax and Scan for Windows 7 and 8. Look for a similar program on the Mac or Unix systems. Then you will need to do the manual scan as above.

I hope this helps.

I cant seem to get my printer to scan - please could you advise? it prints and copies just fine.

Which model Canon All-in-one do you have? What OS is on your computer? Wired or wireless connection - if wired USB, then try a new cable. Scanners often fail when the printer works due to a lack of bi-directional communication with the computer.

Did you install the Canon drivers (or full software) if available? These are available here: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer for supported OS versions for each model. Click on Printers and Multi-function then the product family and then the model. Make sure to select x64 if you have a 64-bit Windows OS. Not all Canon all-in-ones have support for scanning under the Mac OS.

For USB printers, if you plugged in the data cable before installing the Canon drivers, you usually get a generic driver that only runs the printer. If you have done this, then uninstall the driver and remove the data cable before installing the Canon software.

For networked printers, sometimes you need to connect the printer via USB and install additional setup files to get the scanner to work. (Not all scanners work over a network; with a wireless network, signal loss can be a problem.) Again it depends on the model - check the documentation.

Next are you trying to use the buttons on the all-in-one or launching the scans from the computer? If you are using the buttons on the scanner, you need the full software (MP Navigator for Windows) installed and a monitor program running on your machine. Otherwise, you will be limited to launching a scan from the computer. (Please note: you need to set up the destinations for the scan buttons in the software first; so scan from the computer at first to see what the best default settings are for most of your documents.)

I hope this helps.

I have the HP Officejet 6500 printer/scanner/fax/copy. I have set it up with the USB cable (not wireless), and now every time I try and scan, it tells me: "No scan options." Help!

Did you install the full featured software or did you connect the printer to the computer and get a generic driver? The generic driver in the OS may not control the scanner on an all-in-one. Remove any generic driver and unplug the data cable. Download and install the software from http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3795406& , select your OS.

Check through HP update if there is a patch to your driver or software. If you use a USB hub or print server, try a direct connection.

Are you launching the scan from the printer or from the computer? You need the monitor program running and to have set the scan destinations in the HP software before using the buttons on the unit. Try launching the HP software and scanning there. Once you do that you will have a better idea of the destinations and default settings to use in the Scan buttons on the software. These will be uploaded to the printer by the software.

I hope this helps.

(Scanners require bi-directional communication with the computer so try a new data cable if problems persist.)

Lost my CD-ROM

First I'll assume that by "reboot" you mean you had to "re-install" the operating system on the computer. Simply rebooting the computer doesn't mean you have to re-install the software.

I found the driver page for the Canon N656U scanner here:

<http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=351&modelid=8008>

You can download the equivalent software that was on the installation CD from there and re-install your software and driver that way.

Downloading software (Twain??)

The download website for your scanner is here:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=351&modelid=8008

A TWAIN driver is simply a generic scanner software driver that your specific Canon software can hook into and use.

I recommend starting with this one and see if it installs the TWAIN driver you need:

"CanoScan Toolbox v2.2.3 for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP"
