Sony Vaio VGN A-690 no battery detected

Yeah. If when you take out the A/C adapter, the laptop goes off immediately, even though you have bought a new battery, then it's definitely some hardware issue with the laptop itself. I'd say just live with it as it wouldn't be worth getting fixed (cheaper to get a new laptop).

If it can run on battery fine, it's just that windows indicates that the battery is not detected, then it could be a software issue. But given it's the same in Windows 7 as with XP, this could be BIOS related. Perhaps try flashing the BIOS?

The installation CD won't run and the adapter doesn't show up when it is plugged in

You may try plugging the adapter to another usb port. If it still not being detected you can plug it to another computer for isolation purpose. So you can verify if its a problem with your adapter or the usb ports on your computer.
Also check the device manager, You can follow the instructions below

Right click my computer
Go to properties
Click on hard ware and then click on device manager .
Look for network adapter and check if you see your adapter model number .
If you see other devices under network adapter , that maybe your adapter itself already. You just need to install the software for it to work.

You can try running the setup cd to another machine to check if its a problem with the cd or your cd drive.

Cheers,
KJ

CANNOT INSTALL WIRELESS G NOTEBOOK ADAPTER

- check if the adapter met the system requirements - uninstall any previous wireless adapters installed in the computer
- insert the adapter - wait if the adapter gets detected - if it's detected it'll ask for the setup CD. - run through the recommended option first and if it fails choose the advanced option - manually browse for the drivers that your system requires using the CD - if it still fails, try downloading the most recent the drivers for the adapter - if it fails again, try installing the adapter to a different computer. - if the adapter still won't work with the other computer its defective

Wireless adapter not showing up in network conections, icon

This happened to me when I had to install a wireless router in my house using my laptop to initialize the network for the first time.
The start up software messed with my settings for wireless detection on my laptop. It turned off the automatic detect for wireless networks in the
"Wireless Zero Configuration"
(This has the settings for the 802.11 wireless adapters
i.e. the one that comes with the R4000 presario)

to get to this hit start>run...
and type in this:
%SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s

go to "Wireless Zero Configuration" and enable automatic startup
, if the service is stopped, start it.
hit the apply button to save your settings.

CD ROM doesn't detect discs at all?

My best quess wouldbe that the drive went out and you just don't realize or want to admit it. Switch it back to another system to test it, if it still dosn't work scrap it. Otherwise I would try booting to dos with an old 98se disk, see if it's your OS if it is, reinstall 2k.
